Does anyone know what sound decoder Atlas put in the S-2 model? I have one with sound and one without, would like to upgrade the second.

    Thank you

I don't think that particular (ESU) decoder has been made available separately yet.

I asked Atlas and they said it was a customed decoder and not available. My next question to them was going to be if I send the DC to them, would they install it, but I haven't gotten around to asking.

btw, they said to use the Select Micro for the decoder setting in Decoder Pro.

Spook show has a great writeup on the S-2s: http://www.spookshow.net/loco/atlass2.html

The decoder is a customized ESU LokSound Select Micro DCC sound decoder. You cannot buy it separate. Also, Atlas will not install a decoder for you. You will have to buy a wired DCC decoder and then install it yourself.

….which is probably going to be quite a challenge. While I haven't tried it in this particular loco, I'm not sure you can shoehorn a standard Select Micro or V4 Micro into it. I also suspect the new slide-in sound decoders are probably too long, but I haven't looked into this very closely.

Honestly, the easiest (and probably cheapest) route is to pick up another unit that already has the sound decoder, swap the shells (if needed) and then sell the DC unit.
