Good afternoon...I just purchased an Athearn N-scale John Deere train set with the 2-8-0 steamer, 3 passenger cars and the flat car with the 2 tractors. These Athearn JD sets seem to be a bit of a mystery as I have not seen them before. After a little research, I think this is the 3rd N-scle set that they have released and am wondering about the first two sets as well as the sets in general. If you have any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
My son works at A JD dealership and they do sell the set. He called me and told me when the last one was available although I didnt get one. John Deere sells a lot of toys with their brand on it. I have seen some of the other sets sell on ebay. Cant tell you anything other than that.
Set #1 had an SD70, a boxcar, a flat car with two tractors, an Auto Max, and a Gondola. Here is a web page with some information and a picture. Set #2 had a F59PHI, 2 Bombardier coaches, a Bombardier cab, and a flat car with two tractors. I could not find any websites with any information on set #2, but I do have this set and could take a picture if you are interested. I believe Athearn stopped after set #3. I was always surprised that Athearn made so few of the sets and did not publicize them, as many John Deere fans as there are, I would think they could have sold a lot of these sets. I'm not a big John Deere fan but I got set #2 because I just really liked the looks of it, and, although not prototypical, it does look feasable, similar to how ads are often done on the sides of busses.
Robert, I would very much appreciate if you could take a picture of the 2nd set. Do you have the third set as well? It is a very nice little set with that Athearn 2-8-0. Do you have any idea of where a person could get the 1st and 2nd set? Thanks again for the info.
The only set I have is set #2. I'll try to get a couple of pictures of it tonight. I do occasionally see the first two sets on ebay.
And some closeups of the cab car: This car reminds me of buses with ads on the side so it actually looks feasible to me and is one of the reasons I bought this set.
