Anyone besidesme a fan of this road? I used to go to their shops west of Snowflake, Az, then drive down to Holbrook, AZ where they exchanged cars with my Sante Fe . Apache ran those great sounding Alco C 420's and i proudly own two sporting the Apache paint scheme in N scale, Atlas units.
Railfanned it once in the Holbrook area and am glad to have seen it. I guess that economics caught up with the paper mill, as it has with so many other mills.
Never heard of these guys, and it looks very cool. The green and white must be the current livery? I really like the red, white and sky blue scheme too. Google images also shows some silver/red and even some blue and white. Thanks for the pointer! Now I have some reading and researching to do.
I know one of the engineers, the papermill it served has been closed for several years and the Apache was shut down at the same time, so he told me. Tracks and equipment are still present. Atlas made the Alco C-420's in the green and white colors in N scale. I managed to get two.
The newest Railfan & Railroad magazine is an All Alco issue and they have a nice short piece on the Apache. They are now in the business of freight car storage, cleaning and repair, and run twice a week.
My memory is saying that something had been, or is in the works to bring a new industry to the former mill site. Have you by any chance heard of this possibility?
