It has been over a year since we have seen this thread, but it is a good one. Here is an image of my newest SP fantasy paint scheme with the FVM GEVO finished in a modified Black Widow scheme, with the trailing KATO AC44-9 that you have seen before. The GEVO is not totally finished as I lost the rear deck handrails and I need to add plow and a couple of small items. BTW, along with the excellent FVM unit, I added a KATO motor so that it would run with all my other locomotives. Excellent detail on model that runs extremely well. Hope you enjoy. Carl
I have thought about that speed lettered black widow for a while, and it looks better than I expected
Carl, These are cool. This is what the heritage unit should have looked like. Black Widows forever!! LOL Great job, Wolf
Glad to see this great thread resurrected too! Love the fantasy heritage units! Wish life would imitate art in this case! I'll contribute with some shots of my latest N scale SW1500 kitbash (#2642)..... Some street running.... Close up view showing illuminated numberboards plus BLMA drop grabs, windshield wipers and sunshades.... Head-on view showing large "SP" on intake louvers and the removed gyralights...
tehachapifan, That unit is the best, most real, looking model that I have aver seen in N scale. Your talent is unreal. The Eduard Mesh really sets off the grills. Is it metal and is it available in the USA? That mesh might look pretty convincing on an SP tunnel motor. Again, thanks for posting the images of an extra special project. Very well done. Carl
Carl, thank you for the very, very kind words! Yes, the Eduard mesh worked out great on these models. I looked really hard for something that might work and I was really happy when I ran across it. The pattern for the top grills is slightly oversized but looks about right. Its the 4X6 mesh (00102) and would probably work really well for the top grills of a tunnel motor. The pattern for the front grill is absolutely spot on and is the 2X4 mesh (00108). This stuff is really sturdy, yet easy to cut and bend into shape. Really a dream to work with, actually. It is etched metal and comes in a sheet that's about 3" X 5". It is available in the USA through at least one source. Can't remember if we can post retailers here or not though.
David, Well done. I think my next one will be a Daylight version. Russell, I think I was on that car that day. Woopee. Carl
Speed lettering for the black widow works really well. I've thought about painting most of my modern yellow fleet into SP colors and modeling a modern SP, and that black widow gives me ideas...
Hi Jeff, you are probably correct, good thing it was not a 1:1 paint job. Now, you will remember the following experimental paint scheme done by the SP. This was / is just wrong, but I just had to do one. Good ole Halloween scheme, yuck. I found the picture of this unit in the "PA Alco's Glamour Girl" book on page 95. Carl
...but the B units were sure easy to do...just black. That's why the Halloween paint wasn't adopted by senior management. At the same time, senior management DID approve bloody nose (what I call primer coat). I also have a few engines painted in Halloween just to be different. However, when the SP had Daylight, Black Widow and Tigerstripes all at the same time...well, it's hard to improve on perfection.
