Nice. Can anyone translate the slogan? Something about "bridging generations"? That really gets to the heart of it for me.
Some of us had grandfathers that visited our layouts and dad's who've left us and gone before us. How touching.
Wow, great stuff. A childhood friend had a wonderful Märklin layout and we played with it often. He had relatives in West Germany and each Christmas he and his brothers would receive trains and accessories to add to their collection. This was in the era when much of what Märklin produced was metal and everything made was of superb quality. Even their catalogs harkened back to an earlier era. I've never owned any Märklin, but I remain a great admirer of their brand and heritage. This is the cover of their 1953 catalog (which for the record pre-dates me!).
Just got around to seeing this. Beautiful. We all have a bit of that kid in us. I remember my first layouts as a kid - nothing to match those memories, and those of my Dad who built that for me. There's a bit of my Dad in my current layout, one that I built with my own hands, but with that memory of my Dad in the background. It's like there's a piece of him in there. I don't blame anyone for being misty-eyed about this. I completely understand. I've been there.
Some of my best memories of my father are of the times we built and ran Marklin layouts. Thanks Geeky!
Excellent commercial, yes, I also got misty eyes. Putting it in the context, as I live in Germany, Marklin is still a traditional bestseller (and the only one that did not move production to China - but to East Europe). I have an old Marklin DC locomotive from the 70s (they called HAMO line at that time, now it is the TRIX brand) that weights a ton (it is all metal) and pulls whatever you can couple behind it. You can not really do precise switching, even if it is now DCC equipped, but being it a road loco, it does not really matter. It can also ride on code 83 tracks and its almost kids proof. Bottom line, Marklin can be weird with their own system, but the quality is excellent and you can still order spares for 50years old equipment, therefore I think they qualify for full quality concept. Plus, they are still running toy trains to get kids hooked on the market (3 rails AC unfortunately).....
Ha-ha, I did something very similar with an F800 loco. I was in my terrible twos , and there was no fly. Just a random toss!
