A collection of shots I took while travelling by train or just trainspotting alongside the tracks. Most of the shots are from the stations at Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Thieu, thanks for that fine and varied collection of videos. It looks like all main lines are electrified, but the diesel switching operation was obviously not so. The freight cars are very different from those in the USA. The very box-like ones, are they actually containers on flat cars? I am also interested in the apparent tank cars-what are those ladder like structures on the ends of them?

The mainles are all electrified. We have never had mainline diesels for passenger trains: as soon as steam ended, all mainles were under wire. Diesels are only used for freight trains.

The brown diesel you see is a historical engine from the fifties, built in the Netherlands and based on a Baldwin design. It made a railfan trip and visited some industrial spurs. It's one of my favorite engines, and I am glad to have a N scale model of it.

The boxy things are containers on container cars. We use flatcars only to transport rail or other special stuff.

The tank cars are hoppers that carry dolomite from a mine in Belgium. They use it for making dead burned magnesium. Don't know why those cars are so oddly shaped. They look different from the regular coal or iron ore hoppers, and are more like the grain hoppers.

Thieu, thanks for your clear explanations to my questions. Keep on railfanning.
