I wouldn't mess with sound initially, run the DCC you have and get a few conversions under your belt then look into sound.
Your Digitrax controller will run a DC loco on address 00

I use cheap chalks and charcoals from the craft store, find a way to grind them and apply with a brush.

Doubt it, but the trucks come apart easily then you can solder the contacts only.
