Oh I now also have a High Hood conversion to do on an Atlas U33C. One question on this, is there any upgrade for the Atlas U33C radiator grills as they are rather poor quality? I feel like it needs a see through grill on it... Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I had wondered if a person could cut a square of metal door screen for that? I have a couple BN Atlas shells that need a treatment.
Pulled this old Athearns boxcar out of the junk box and tried my hand at weathering. What do you guys think?
I don't have anything currently, but a few months ago, I painted and detailed a F7 in the BN freight scheme. It started off as a Bachman in a really bad warbonnet scheme. I added a grab iron ladder up both sides of the nose, drilled a second headlight, added the beacon, a 3 chime horn, coupler lift bars, custom formed by yours truly, and MU hoses. The windows were also custom cut to be flush with the shell.
It was also my first attempt at detailing and my first airbrush painted locomotive. The grab irons on the doors were bent from brass wire, and the nose grabs are repurposed staples.
I agree. You are doing a great job. Always glad to see a custom build, whether all from scratch or adding hand rails or grab irons. Good to see someone not afraid to try it. You and everyone else is better than you may think. Please share pictures of the build.
It is now painted in the correct paint scheme I love covered wagons in Burlington Northern, they just look right a lot better than the E units. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Thanks guys, glad you like it. Gjslsffan wanted to see some pictures of the build, so here are a few. You have already seen the first photo, with grabs being test fitted after drilling the nose door headlight. Here it is after stripping the paint. Santa Fe wanted to stay on. Here are some of the detail parts. The speed recorder and other details hadn't arrived. Masking for nose stripes. Decals. I still haven't dull coated the model. I just got some for a model airplane I am going to start. That is about it. I hope you all enjoy.
I got a little bit done on my AHM C628 upgrade. Both sides of the model are the same so I had to replace the grills on one side, and add another hood door. Need to work on making it tidier and sand down the filler. Next job is to add the missing grills from the front and the access doors above. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I started a thread on my latest workbench project called "Santa Fe Caboose Project". You could probably guess that it is about building a caboose. I used a Bachmann wide vision caboose as the base, from the same haul as the F7 I made from a few posts ago. I did some research on the prototype to determine what I should do to it. I am building Santa Fe 999758, a CE-11 class caboose. This caboose is usually on the Argonne Local out of Hodgkins, IL, near the UPS packing facility on the BNSF Chillicothe Subdivision. I completely scratchbuilt the interior and underframe, using the cut up original frame for bolsters and end platforms. The steps are scratchbuilt too, as the model steps are too short. The detail on the original model is train set quality, so not the best. All grabs are separately applied, and end cages will be custom built as well. All the model photos are on my phone, so check out my thread if you want to see more.
A small update on my C628 Project. Not much work been done lately but I managed to find some time to get the front grill fitted along with the exhaust stacks. Started drilling and test fitting the handrails but they don't quite fit... Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Atlas RS1 that I am going to paint for the M&StL. The M&StL had a large steam era bell mounted on the front of their units, so I had to move the walkway over the radiator shutters and since Atlas had indented the existing shutters where the walkway was I filed down the shutters to the base and will scratch some shutters to the right of the new walkway position. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski
Just a small update today. I have put the C628 Project to one side this week to work on my other high hood conversion. I have made a start on the side handrails on my SD35, these are Smokey valley ones, it has been a while since I used any of these and I forgot how fiddly they are. After an hour I got one set of long hood rails installed, I can't do the ends yet as I forgot I need to drill all the holes for the grab irons first! When the body work is just about done I will work on the chassis, I need to get that fuel tank sorted and look at the chassis to get it ready for a DCC sound chip, lots of room for speakers in this old Roco unit. Well, I need to weather two of these. The lading is: One has blinker fluid for the Utah drivers, one is loaded with muffler bearings, and one has several tons of dehydrated steam for the Heber Valley RR.
No projects on my workbench as of now. Here's my disaster workbench. Believe it or not I can find what I'm looking for in that mess.
Good looking BN F unit BN had a bunch of F's from the GN, NP, and SP&S The freight units were in the 600, 700, &800 series and were painted like your model. The passenger F's were in the 9700 series and had the hockey stick paint job.
