Does anyone have a spare SD70ACe frame / mechanism they would want to part with? I was milling one for a sound decoder install, and had an OOPS moment (ok, the language was a lot more colorful than that).
HI is the frame just broken or is it destroyed ? can you take a pic. of it. I mite be able to fix it for you.
Here is what I did. Not sure there is any way to fix. The right frame half shows the marking of what I was attempting to mill out. How it would go back together
Yeah, if / when I try this again, I would clamp differently. Put more support on the area being cut away, and less rigidity on the rest of the frame to try to eliminate the stress. Or, maybe just hand file, and not use Dremel. Also interesting to note that the right side of the frame actually has an extra support strut, exactly where the left frame snapped. At least, I got this loco in a "lot" purchase, of which the other items I was much more interested in (and at a very good deal). So, I am not totally broken up over this happenstance.
If repairable, cool. I can finish milling out the area on the broken piece, and then go about repairing. As Ryan asks, what is the method?
that's some nasty toolmark chatter. You're either not clamped well enough or are hogging too much material at once or both. I may have a left SD70ACe frame half sitting around...I'll take a look. Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com
Yep - I lost the clamping; not really sure how. It may have been with a taking too much metal at once. This was my first true milling attempt, versus brute force Dremel filing, so learning (still with a Dremel)
Double/triple check your setup, including making sure that the machine's gibs are adjusted and snugged down properly. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast... Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com
wire and a special solder. I have repaired 10 frames. but right now I'am layed up. I just had hand surgery. so I'am out for 3 mt
firstly only place I heard that was in the military, and they are absolutely right, slow is smooth, smooth is fast. basically means take time into what you are doing, that way you wont waste any time redoing it. secondly... That's a SDP40F frame... I know cause I'm one of those nut jobs that likes to tear down new locos... (can I send you my frame to mill? )
Hmm, if it is being reused in the SDP40F, there is a chance they may come back into stock at Kato USA. @nightmare0331 - Kelly, if you do have a frame half, please let me know.
You would be correct on both counts. That's where I picked that quote up. As a side note, here's that same frame (which is a SDP40F) with a Loksound Micro and sugar cube speaker installed. Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com
