I am looking to either make or buy tufts of grass to get the following affect. Does anyone have suggestions on the best way?
Hi Paul, if you have a static grass tool it's easy. Use some metal shed cover it with plastic wrap or similar, put some points of glue on it and start with the static grass you like ! The glue should not be a fast dry one, so that you can add several layers of grass if you like. Tip : 1st for long grass types or more layer let it dry up side down 2nd multi layer, first the short green , then the longer dry colors Regards Karsten View attachment 70622 View attachment 70623 (it's a code55 joiner)
I threw everything at this one, kind of the way nature does to achieve "biodiversity." I started with turf and some ground foam, then added several varieties of static grass and the long "field grass." I use one of those low-budget Grass-Tech machines for static grass, and it works just fine. The final touch for me is to take a pair of scissors to remove extra-long pieces and trim it down where I want a more uniform look. Sometimes I comb my static grass, too, to fluff it up and remove loose pieces.
I will add that I've seen a lot of folks get good results using longer applications of static grass or tufts for easier application and then trim with a cheapy electric razor/trimmer after its dry.
Here is a photo of all types of grasses. What you don't see here is the use of a static grass applicator machine. How would this scene look if your grass stood straight up? If I want that look I can go to my local park. I feel more comfortable in this outback scene however. Jim
Those are likely premade tufts of static grass. There are multiple brands out there. Scenic Express imports most of them in the states. They are also packaged in different branding for use in Wargaming.
Just saying that's how it looks to my eyes. Was not sure what it was in reality. I wonder if Scenic Express has updated their catalog recently? I need to go check and download....
I use the Silfor tufts, lots of different colors and lengths to choose from. For really brown/dead grass tufts, take some packing twine, and holding the end in tweezers, cut off about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch, and just stick the cut end into a bead of glue, and spread the threads how you want. That is what you can see here, along the fence
