I was trying to remove the body on this engine but thought I'd better get info on how, before I break something. This has the roller bearing trucks so I know not to grab them. Help would be appreciated. I tried the search ??? Thanks Lee
Does this help? http://www.pmrr.org/Articles/RollingStock/NScaleEquipment_LVL3_Atlas_RS-1Disassembly.htm Wayne
Just go slow i broke mi still had to glue it back together. It works for me:-((( will take more time the next time,
I have one of these in Southern paint. It's the only locomotive I could never remove the shell and it was a mystery to me why. Now I have the secret key and will file it away for future use. Thank you!
I got it apart, painted, decaled and back together and didn't break anything. I picked an easy scheme but it is one I wanted.
I bought two of these 10-15 years ago, one Kato and one China. IIRC, the bodies must have come off fairly easily, because both now are in B&M Minute Man scheme. I know, I know, B&M never owned an RS-1, only RS-3s. Gimme a break, besides it's MY railroad...so there. LOL BTW, both are great runners in DC.
It was pretty easy, most of the pain was in the $12.50 cost, since they're body mounted with the two pilots supplied. Just cut off the old draft gear box, glue in the new pilots and screw in the assembled coupler. Micro trains # 001 32 070 (1158)
Hmmm...supplied pilots. That's where my planning goes awry. My locomotive was an eBay purchase with no pilots. That gaping hole in the pilot will be a challenge if I can't find a replacement. Be that as it may. Thank you for starting this topic and answering why I could never get the shell off. Now I have a clue.
The pilot conversion 001 32 070 (1158, old#) for the Atlas/Kato RS-1 is still listed on the MT online store, black only, now $14.25. Some conversion for other locomotives came color matched (kind of matched) to the the sill. I don't know if the RS-1 was ever offered in any other other color. MT, I would assume will phase these conversions out, because the loco's haven't been made for awhile. The version made in China doesn't need it. I checked the large retailer in my state (Maryland), and couldn't find the 1158. Other retailers may still have some, but direct maybe your only choice. Regards, Charley.
First off the supplied pilots in the conversion kit (1158) fill the gap in the pilots of the model perfectly, just glue in. I just got my conversion kit from N Scale Supply, they may have more on hand or can get them from MT at the 12.50 price ?? My conversion pilots were molded in black, the same as the models. Hope these pictures help.
the fit and finish of these are great, as mentioned before, when Micro Trains first released the conversions, they were molded in the colors of the locos. This is a U30C with a MTL kit...one nice thing is the MU hoses are molded on.
