For DC layouts, you will probably need the engine to also be battery powered.
Control of the switches will probably be a big issue.

there is no radio or battery operated engine on the market that I am aware of. I have seen people build R/C and battery controlled trains though, in fact there's entire forums dedicated to the subject. Whats so difficult about the clubs control system? Installing battery and R/C in a pre-existing DC or DCC system is going to the extreme end.

Have a look at the NWSL S Cab: http:

There's also a S Cab Yahoo Group forum.

The S Cab uses radio signals to control the batteries powering the locos, i. e. no track wiring. The Ring system powers the locos thru the rails.

I use the Deltang 2.4 hx system .Google Deltang and all will be fairly clear .It works a treat .The reciever is very small. I have it running in an Athearn CF7 and use a 7.4 lipo battery .its almost certainly the future as you need no track power ,switch wiring ,rail joiners etc .This is my first post so hi to very one .

A couple of pics showing just how basic it is .the Lipo charging lead comes through the fan hole and can be pushed out of the way to hide it completely as can the crude ,and temporary ,brass tube on off switch which is due to be replaced a tiny slide switch or maybe a reed switch incorporated into the next generation of receivers. The receiver can be shoved up into the top of the hood and its position is again only temporary .
No lights yet but there are LED pads on the tiny receiver to take them .you now know as much as I do.:funny:

    This.

I;ve worked NCE and Digitrax both, and neither of them were that hard to get started on. Programming, maybe, and some can get downright mind bnoggling whent it coems to turnout controls, but to run an engine, make it squeak or ding, that shouldn't be very hard...?

I could certainly see wanting an omni-functional throttle if you live near multiple layouts (Clubs and Round Robins) with different control systems...
