I had the urge for a display case for my engines when they aren't on the layout earning their keep. Had some extra benchwork material sitting around and turned it into this.
Seems like a great way to store detailed locos, and show 'em off at the same time !!! Does it have some sort of front to keep dust away ???
Cool. I always thought half the point of having a collection is to show it off. Seems a shame to spend so much money on locos/ rolling stock only to store them out of sight. I live in a seismically active area so plexyglass doors are a must on my display cases. What a nightmare it would be to come home only to find all your locos pileded up on the floor. As run8racing mentioned, covers keep your locos dust free as well. Brian
I have not gotten doors/covers yet. I intend to either have a hinged plexiglass from the top, or can add a piece of wood to top and bottom, cut grooves and have sliding doors
See, when you get a few locomotives stored in close proximity, they are like rabbits and reproduce all over the place...... Looks like a nice storage setup you have there
LOL! I was going to say while it is a fine display case I could see that it would fill up in short order. Not even a plexyglass door could stop that from happening!! I thought that was unitrack the locos were sitting upon. Do you find it difficult to set each unit on the rails given the limited vertical space between each shelf? I was going to do the same with my display cases (using peco flex track) but decided instead to rout V-grooves in each shelf that the trucks easily fall into to allign all the units. Much cheaper to boot. Brian
I didn't have too much of a problem setting them on the track. There is a little more then 3" opening, I put the outside wheels of the truck on the track first, then tilt the engine upright. I was able to secure the track from a friend who stocks up on anything and everything, even if he has no use for it sometimes. He purchased a large lot of unitrack a while back, and though I haven't been given a price yet, I'm certain it won't be more then $20.
Nice idea. I thought about one of these for my stuff, but without the realestate given to me (a wall) by my wife that idea went out the window. So I actually included display areas on my layout plan.
I got a door made for my case this week. Now I'm deciding whether I need light bars all the way across the top row or not. The light in there is a Sylvania 4 bulb battery powered LED. I can get 4 across there and turn them so the light hits the back of case. Of course now with the glass front, I have a reflection from the stair wall showing. It's only a 4' walkway there.
