z scale marklin 8883 locomotive help with reinstall of wheels and gears

    I hae a marklin 8883 steam loco 2-10-0 . I need tips on reinstalling wheel group with push rods and gears in belly pan. the gears in belly pan are they all the same if not how do you tell which loose gear goes were? also any tricks on how to get gears and wheel set installed back into belly pan? also how to line up wheel set correctly. any help would be appreciated. was oiling gears and train turned over out come loose gears and wheel set. any help would be appreciated. thank's

    I hope you fixed it by now!

    Hi,

    There is one gear that is a different size than the others. The trick is to put the center 2 wheel assembly in with the pistons first. You need patience to do the rest but work from the middle out. The one different gear goes right on the motor drive gear. That you put in before anything. The rest of the same size go between the wheel pairs.

    I found that it worked if you roll the wheel set into mesh with the gears rather than try to just drop (slowly) the wheel set in vertically. When you finally have all wheels in carefully test each set of side rods with tweezers to ensure they move back and forth and aren't binding. If they bind, or are tight, then you need to try and rotate one or more of the wheels one tooth or so, so that you end up with all side rods level and able to move back and forth a bit without being tight.
    Lots and lots of patience required.
