Definitely. I'll have to take a shot of one crawling through my town (if I ever finish up)... would make for some pretty funny 1950's style B movie horror film shots!

Actually,it IS the 17 year cicadas we're expecting here in the Northeast,Brood X.There are literally going to be TRILLIONS of them,as many as a billion an acre, supposed to be worst in DC..[No comment...]..We had them here in 79 or so,it was unbelievable in some areas. Some places were absolutely overrun, others, nothing. There were fisherman catching them by the shovelful, drying them out in the sun,and filling 55 gallon drums with them, packed in salt..GREAT for big bass...
Years ago,I was a long distance bicycle racer.I was in a 100 mile race during a gypsy moth invasion.SCHMILLIONS of caterpillars everywhere.I went into a corner pretty hot, slid right off the road when I hit a RIVER of caterpillars crossing the road 3 deep.Destroyed the brand new $400 set of rims I just put on my Peugeot, along with a pile of roadrash..[Yeah,roadrash full of caterpillar bits..Uuugghhh..]

Okay I want to see somebody figure out how to install a decoder in one of those things and program it as a switchman/brakeman.

Well I don't worry about bugs so much. Maybe the occasion spider. My big worry it to see a bull snake being chased or chasing one of my locomotives as it comes out of a tunnel!! That would be a disaster of devilish proportion!!

I don't have too many bug problems on my layout...
the cats that live on it usually take care of the bugs.

I have stated on several other threads that Wolf spiders are my main trespassers. They are usually dealt with by using the same picks used for uncoupling. Several have been hit by trains, but the worst was a large one that lost a fight with a Kato E8. It took quite a while to clean pieces, legs, slime, and even a little bit of "web stuff" from that engine. And they look absolutely EVIL under a magnifier !!! They would get inside structures as well. Didn't do much for business at my Corner Cafe !!! As far as the cicadas, I can't wait 'til 2023 !!! That's when the 17 yr. bugs come back. I have 37 recipes for them !!! They taste similar to almonds !!!

Well a report I've seen states they taste like Shrimp. but I'm not that hard off yet. And just when you think you and your layout are safe there is the Florida assortment of super critters. A snake large enough that can swallow a whole consist for a snack and now the Giant Snails. Reportedly they can eat through a stucco wall, they like the stuff, and can you imagine the slime trail across your mainlines.

When I lived in San Diego I discovered that snails absolutely LOVE salt. Just give them a few grains of it and they put on an incredible act to show their appreciation !!! As far as the snakes, that just sounds cool !!! I could deal with that !!!

I had a bad problem with slugs years ago..Salt makes them "happy" too,but beer works better.Put a container of beer outside, and they'll drink it,and die..Only problem,it seemed to attract every slug within a ten mile radius..LOL!!!

As Pie 39 stated, 'tis the season !!! I "bagged" my first wolf spider of the year last night. Brought this up at LHS this morning and one guy had photos on his phone of a colony of ants that came down his basement wall, across his HO layout, across a couch, end table, up the opposite wall, and back out again. They stayed in a column about 8" wide. Did no damage at all. They were just passin' thru' on their way to a new home. I watched ants do this in my yard about 4 years ago, but I had a can of Raid nearby in case they got too near the house. He says he has it on video also, but it's about 1 1/2 hours. LOU D- You say you have beer in containers outside ??? What is your address ??? Ha,ha,ha !!!
