Great Thread! And great posts so far!..... OK here's my contributions: 1st is my locomotive service facility. Next is my grain elevator. Brian
More recently I built this replica of the enginehouse on the Pine Creek Railroad in Alaire State Park, NJ. To make this structure, I drew it brick-for-brick on the computer, and had the drawings laser-cut in acrylic. Then I turned the laser-cut parts into masters for resin castings. A close-up of the brickwork: I drew the windows and had them laser-cut from laserboard; the windows are double-hung and even feature the locks.
My very first, the Flagstaff, AZ depot, dating back to 1975, published in RMC and still on the layout today: It looks much different today, but here's the 70's view with the tan shingles: http://atsfrr.net/resources/dkspencer/Depots/ATSF/Flagstaff_AZ.jpg Probably my favorite one to date: The Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff http://thingsyoushoulddo.com/wp2/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/hotel-monte-vista.jpg That's the whole block, building by building, completely scratchbuilt. Shot I took from trackside - just to prove how dominant that building and roof sign really is!
I am really impressed with the number of folks out there willing to tackle scratch building specific prototype structures. They really stand out on a layout. Here is one I built over 20 years ago.
Hey, Mark... that house in the last posting...? Do you have that on-site yet? The yard looks like as much fun to model as anything I've ever seen. Particuarly that giant fish totem/chain saw carving with a red and white spoon lure. I want to see how you're going to do that one.... maybe soak a bait minnow in ACC??? "I love your modeling, but why does it smell like fish in here?"
Yep, I just finished that one up this past week. And yeah, definitely looking forward to modeling all that tasteful lawn decoration Surprisingly enough, you're not far off on the fish. I am actually going to be using a bait minnow - just not a real live one. Nowadays they make fake bait minnows out of some sort of rubbery substance (think gummy bears). -Mark
This carfloat apron was my first scratchbuild. Not much to it, but it sure opened up my eyes to the possibilities. Just because something isn't available as a kit doesn't mean that you can't build it. -Mark
I agree. Especially with the limited number of kits out there. You start to recognize the same ones on someone's layout. "Oh theres another Model Power Apartment House kit". QFT
This was my biggest 'scratch' project'. Portland Union Station. It resides on the OWNY layoyt in Nevada City....
