I think the boxes the Metra unit is sitting on contains a San Luis & Rio Grande SD90MAC....Hard to tell through the bubble wrap though...

Pretty sure they are SLRG SD90MAC's, you can see the "CIT" on the nose and make out the "Rio" along the long hood under Metra.

If you look even closer you can see where one of the white stripes on the nose of the F40PH goes right over a marker light, it doesn't look like a Kato factory painted unit. Could it be a pre-production sample of the paint scheme done by a custom painter and the SD90MAC's are some of his other work.

P.S. I just scrolled down and read the caption of the photo, you could be right.

Looks like SLRG SD90MACs to me. Beyond my era, but cool nonetheless.

Just to be clear, the link in the first post comes from Kato's official Twitter stream.

What about the Milwaukee Road Little Joes?

Don't know about the Little Joes seems what appears to be a yellow stripe on the bottom sill and possibly the nose would not fit any Milw. scheme I've seen. What ever it may be it does have an impressive wheelbase and basically dwarfs the unit sitting on the box. Probably about the size of a E unit or a PA. Wait I know!! It's the long awaited and hoped for E-5B.

Darn, I was hoping it would be pre-production samples of the SD40-2 re-run...

I wasn't refering to the placing of the stripes, if you look at the original twitter photo you'll see that the actual lens of the right hand marker light is half covered by the white stripe, and the way other nose detail is either covered or not covered indicates to me that this is a custom painted sample done to show what it will look like.

And hopefully with the first production frame style.

So , based on that photo , are the Metra F40PH models reasonably accurate in terms of lighting etc?

From what I can see , they have ditch and tail lights , and the light arrangement above the cab windows looks to be right as well.

I appreciate that without DCC you won't be able to get the full "light show" , but at present I'm nore interested in how accurate the thing looks , ie it's not just a re-paint of the Amtrak unit.

so a METRA F40PH will get a correct light show, but they are staying away from SP locos because they DON'T want to do a full light show?
