I remotored mine with a LL 2-8-4 motor, it wasn't much of an upgrade from the original motor. I ordered a Faulhaber 1016 with 4:1 gearhead from the Motorman last week, should be here mid week. There is an article in the nov/dec 2010 N Scale Railroading on remotoring the loco. I'll shoot some pics when I install the new motor. If it works as well as I hope, I'll probably buy another and convert my CC GS-4 as well.

I see those have a 2mm shaft. What gear are you using on the shaft?

The Motorman is sending me a shaft and sleeve that doesn't require me to bore out the pinion, I'll let you know how it goes when I get it. In the article, the author bored the stock pinion to 2mm.

I realize that it's somewhat offtopic, but does anyone have an idea where I could pick up a side rod pin for a Kato S2?

I tried the faulhaber 1016 and it was a bit noisy with the 4:1 gearhead for my taste. I received a maxon 1024 from the motorman today and it works great. The speed is a bit high in the top end, but that is an easy fix.

...and the 1024 fits without interfering with the rear spacer and screw I presume?
Out of curiosity because a have a similar project, did you consider a larger diameter motor, like a 1420, and if so why did you decide against it? There seems to be room, at least in theory...
    Thoughts appreciated.

I had removed the rear spacer and screw during a previous remotoring job with a flywheel that didn't work. I considered a 1320 like I have in my cab forwards, great motor, but I decided to go with the 1024 instead just because I didn't feel like cutting the rear of the chassis completely apart. It runs great though.
