1/2" rigid foamboard on top of a 3/8" plywood base (primed) for a 'L' shaped N scale shelve layout 3' x 19': I'm thinking of instead of using some type of adhesive or caulk, why not screws w/ washers to hold the foamboard in place? Enough to do the job w/o going overboard. At least, if there is any reason (that I couldn't imagine) to lift or remove the foam, you could do so w/o ripping things apart. (My argument for screws vs nails )
Why not? Each time you lean against the foamboard from the sides or from on top when doing track, scenery or whatever, you are going to have minute pressure agains the foam by the metal screws. Over time, this is going to rip the foam and everything is going to loosen up.
I used "liquid nails for projects", good for all kinds of things on the pike. Sent from my SPH-M820-BST using Tapatalk
with enough weight caulk might work, but it will be easier to pry up then adhesives. Adhesion to primed surface will be excellent (again, with enough weight evenly distributed) for both, but likely higher for L/N
I just use white glue It seems to work just fine, although drying time is a bit long when using with foam. Just weigh it down while drying.
Latex caulk, not silicone. I personally used Elmer's Wood Glue, but if I had to do it all again, I'd use Polyseamseal All-Purpose clear latex adhesive caulk.
I don't like silicone due to the smell and the mess it seems to make. Cleanup is terrible. Other than that, why not silicone??
I never used that. I assumed it was for construction; wood to wood as in flooring. Isn't it overkill?
cool:Used the cheapest caulk available, liberally applied. Took a long time to dry, but never was an issue. Worked the layout almost immediately. Whenever layout was re-done (5 times) I lost whatever foam was used. Foam never showed any mobility. BTW, price range from cheapest to most costly at Home Depot was > 3:1 per tube, so watch this cost factor.
There is a product specifically for foamboard that HD sells. I picked up this along with additional tubes of clear acrylic caulk that I use all the time and will use for the roadbed.
