    Hello.
Recently i received My BachMann Crane and collect my repair train.

    Train in motion see here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe11pLdXEHY

This Crane is too high for my catenary!
Therefore i Cut off Pipe, and Tower turntable (where Tower is attached to car ).

    Here is Original Crane:

Looking good! I might have to put a work train together now.

Hmmmmmmmm...I may just have to lower my crane like that. I like the looks of it better then that big ring underneath...

I like your work here. I'm curious if the lowering of the tower was essential to match a particular prototype or if you just felt it looked better or if you just needed to for clearance reasons. Do you have any prototype photos you were trying to match that you could share with us?

    Nice job and great video!

What did you use for the flat cars with the track on them?

And what model is the yellow crane?

I don't have any photos or drawings showing a prototype crane, but I do know that in its stock form, the Bachmann model will not clear the power arch on the Walthers turntable. After seeing this work, will grab the razor saw and Tenax.

Doesn't this car come with a thumb wheel and shaft? The shaft goes in one of the windows on the side of the cab and you can lower or raise the small hook by turning the thumb wheel. Move the shaft to a window further back and you can engage the boom and raise or lower it too. I got a similar car from Concor and that is how mine works.

Yup and yup. I dont have that little thumb wheel...so had to make one of my own. I also removed the spring on the bottom of the boom. It kept lifting the boom when completely lowered.

No, I just trim it because original crane scratched my catenary by it's roof(w/o pipe)

    Hello.
Flat cars - this is usual Walters Logging serial cars.
We use them (like them) for track transport in Russia.
But our cars has a rollers installed under the track to move track to crane.

    Yellow crane - from Tomix.

Yes, it does. But for mooving under catenary the roof height(with lowered boom) of original Bachman crane was too high!
It was the reason to trim turntable height of this crane.

I think that gives the crane a much better look. Going to do that to mine! :)

    Ok. I do as following:

    I removed tower.
I used Diamond 170mkm disk to dremel out plastic turntable basic ring from car.
Then i diminished height of this turntable ring.
At last, i skrewed it in by 3 small (D=1mm) screws to metallic basic.
Tower lower "back" ends also be accurately milled, in aim to accurate fitting and free rotation of tower.

Note 1: Tower must freely rotated to left and to right to be placed at car in aim to be in train and passed radiuses without affection on support car.

Note 2: I use Walters Logging car as support car for boom. I dicard original support car. But You can also diminish it's "herringbone pattern".

Note 3: Boom rotation must be restricted at support car.

May be, this data would be useful for Bachman Crane Lovers :)

I just stumbled across this thread, but I really find the modification suggestions a good idea.

I also like the ingenuity of using a log bunk car for the boom tender for the crane, and loading the cars on the train with sectional tracks to make it a real rail train.

Just as a side note, I`m curious if anyone has seen Mike Danneman's recent article on modelling wreck trains? I can`t tell for sure from the article in N Scale Railroading if Mike actually did anything to modify the actual height of the crane or the boom, but I'm not sure how he could get it to operate on his layout with so many tunnels on it.

I thought it might be worthwhile to buy one of these Bachmann 250 ton cranes in N-Scale. It really looks quite impressive, but it does seems to have some clearance issues, particularly with tunnels, and a low bridge I have on my layout. One thing I`ve noticed is that the boom for the crane sits too high, and it has a small spring on the underside of the boom that holds it in tension, so it wants to keep to the same angle of repose. I think I`ve figured out how to modify the boom so it can rest lower, but I don`t really want to lower the turntable on the crane bed itself. I did notice there is a flanged circle on the underside of the crane`s body. Would cutting out that flange help the crane sit lower at all?

    Hello!

I cutted flanges of Tower :

and sawed out turntable, then milled it and skrewed it back:

I like everything you've done. There is another way to lower the crane. You can remove two tabs that hold it up.

What this inquisitive mind wants to know is where did you get the flats that hold prefab track? As well as the one you are using for a crane tender? Ok they are the same car. I got it. What Grin, you don't see a grin...I'm tired of grinning it hurts my face!

Now hurry up I don't have all day. We grumpy types have short days as it is. COL

I believe that would help lower the actual height of the boom itself, if I know which tabs you are referring to. I did notice that myself, and I will probably make that modification. The tall steam stack also definitely has to be removed for clearance.
