I know, not SP era, not even my modeling era, but I came accross this on a SP forum...

I figured out the nose light, the plow and the cab light plate, any ideas for the rest of the details in N Scale, and I have no idea how to get the paint right.

Quite an interesting paint scheme and one that I had never seen on a SP loco before. But seems as if it would be one of the easier ones to replicate.
Paint the base color then nose and the yellow stripe.
Or am I not understanding your question?

Sub, the yellow is tolight/bright for Borg Yellow...do you have an idea of the color?

Also, what type of air conditioner was used on 1980 vintage SP GP40-2's?

I think that once I figure outthe yellow, I will have to have some wing decals custom made.

I am NO way a UP fan. I hate UP actually. But I might paint this loco up just to see if anyone says "Hey! That unit never existed!" Then I could prove them wrong.

Sorry I can't help with the actual color of the yellow, but I agree with you on that it is too light for it to be Borg Yellow.
I was able to find a GP40 that had a Bit date of the 80's with aa Prime mover AC unit on it. below is the link for your viewing.
Hope that helps and keep us posted when you paint it up.
    Have fun

Bremner, maybe try some ATSF yellow? Still looks a bit lighter though. I know my Modelflex ATSF yellow looks pretty close to that.

The AC unit on that loco is a vapor style (ATSF), although most SP units used the prime style. BLMA has both.

From what i have read (and don't quote me on it) when UP took over SP some of the old SP painter who were loyal to SP painted the loco in a SP scheme with UP colors.
I also heard when management found out a few got fired

There were at least two painted this way. Don't know the other number right off hand.

It would make sense since I am sure it costs about $15-20k to paint a locomtive.

Good news, bad news...MicroScale will make custom Snotty Nose decals....I just need to order 150 sets!

it might be cheaper to have brass masks made to paint the wings....

You can actually mask the wings on the Espee nose. I did it with Tamiya masking tape and a sharp hobby knife. That paint scheme might not be too hard to do. I would use ATSF yellow. I think CNW (not Zeto; the other one) or CSX yellow is not correct. They are too yellow.

Sure is an interesting picture. Nice photo of the Espee high plow, too.

Was that painted in Roseville? That yellow looks like lemon yellow, no where as warm a yellow as the UP yellow. CNW yellow has been mentioned, add a bit of white and you might get close.
