    Hello all,

I will be flying to Kansas City tomorrow to spend two weeks at Ft. Leavenworth. Those of you in the KC area will know how close Ft. Leavenworth is. No prison jokes, please. I'll be observing instructors at the command and general staff officer college, though the various prisons are nearby...

I'm looking for suggestions for train-related things to do, especially N scale. I'll have most evenings free, and I'll have a rental car. The middle weekend will be filled showing my wife around. I've made about a dozen trips to Leavenworth over the last four years - this is the first time I've had a weekend that made it worth her flying there for a couple days.

    Suggestions? Layout tour opportunities?

    Thanks in advance,

    Terry

PS I'll post this on one other forum, sorry for the duplication if you read my other favorite. :)

The Kansas City Train Station is now a mall, but I spent a couple hours on the bridge/walkway that goes over the main line. Lot's of trains through there.

    Hope this helps.
I did CPE training as a chaplain at Leavenworth VA, and have heard many of the prison jokes.

Oh man, I was a Sergeant in a medium security female prison after I got out of the Army and that was one of the STRANGEST jobs I have ever had. The things you see in a prison can't possibly be made up... Best of luck and have fun!!:tb-biggrin:

There are the NS, BNSF, UP, and KCS yards in town. The West Bottoms around Kemper is a hotbed of urban train traffic. There used to be a train museum just across the Broadway Bridge, might be gone with new development. Doc's Caboose is a nice LHS right on the tracks in the West Bottoms. Watch how you park or you will BE on the tracks. There is the Show Me Lines LHS in Grandview on the south end of town, you are on the north. Great place.

If you Google map Kansas City, zoom in and you can see the extent of rail yards in this town, second largest in the country.

The BNSF yards next to the downtown airport always seem to have a train staged above the hump yard and along the highway with a funky load. 737 sections from Boeing in Wichita going to Seattle, wind turbine generator nacelles, odd shaped tanks and fabricated assemblies, military equipment, etc.

Enjoy your stay and enjoy the BBQ.
