Would anyone know whether there was a typical range for Alco RS-11 locomotives? Would they have ever been running in Oregon. Most of the diesel shots I have seen for high-hood locomotives in Oregon show Geeps and SDs.

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

I seen some photos of NP RS-11's on the Camas Praire along the Oregon/Idaho border. It was an NP/UP venture at the time, where they dumped off their older diesel. Mostly GP7's and GP9's at the time... late 60's era photo. I'll look through my books to find more info.

If NP ran them in Portland, Oregon, then maybe the SP did, too. I suppose that there's a precedent for nearly anything.

Here is what Wikipedia says about the SP and the area it ran.
Since both railroads ran in Oregon and both had RS-11s then it is possible that both railroads had RS-11s in Portland at the same time. With a little modeling license anything is possible.[IMG]

I just thought a consist with some Geeps and an RS-11 thrown in would like pretty nice pulling a branchline freight. I love the "notched" look of these things.

Spokane Portland and Seattle ran a bunch of Alcos - Centuries, including Alco's biggest, the C636, and several RS-11's

Well, it looks like SP RS-11s in NW Oregon would be in good company, then, with all these RS-11s from Hill lines.

depends on the era, by 1965, they became heavy switchers and off the roster by 1978

Era is 1950s, so I should be fine on that count.

5720 and 5721 were Alco demonstrators delivered in 1956 in Black Widow paint they were setup long hood forward and had steam generator controls and ATS.

5722 was also a long hood forward demonstrator but actually had a steam generator and ATS. Was the only RS11 with a steam generator.

5723 - 5729 delivered in 1956 in Black Widow paint but setup short hood forward

5845 - 5865 delivered in 1959 in Scarlet and Grey setup short hood forward

5866 - 5871 delivered in 1959 in Scarlet and Grey setup short hood forward and were the only RS11's with low nose for a short hood.

That is why a RS-11 was the first locomotive I purchase back the 80's.

Sounds like SP didn't want them/trust them on the main lines. Perhaps close to the roundhouse due to reliability issues. Is that the case?

Alco going down the tubes and a roster dominated by EMD and GE likely had more to do with it.

A minor correction. SP&S never had any Alco RS-11's in their roster of Alco power.
The RS-11's came from the NP in the BN merger of 1970.
None were in SP&S paint but all got BN Green.

still a better history than the RSD15's and the alco hydrolics. The SSW RSD15's were the shortest lived loco's on the SSW roster. The SP RSD15's became swithers almost instantly.
