How many locos... I have about 110. Most are Northern Pacific locomotives but I have connecting line locos and rolling stock. Alco's outnumber everthing else but GM's are right there. FM and Baldwin complete the connecting systems fleets.

I have two, and if you asked my better half she'd say I have two too many. Just getting started, and I'd like to thank you all for sharing your tips, experiences and thoughts. You've helped me get back into railroading and the info I've gathered is certainly helping me enjoy it more.
^^^ I hear that. I get away with alot though because in exiting my car hobby I haven't even spent 1/4 of the proceeds from the cars and parts I am slowly selling off. It's nice with a bad back to be able to sit at the table inside where it's warm with the TV on and detail a locomotive, instead of laying on my back under a car in the cold. I actually showed my wife the pic of Mr. SP's loco shelf and said "look it could be alot worse"

First post, and it seems like a good place to say hi and introduce myself. Just getting back into the hobby after 30+ years. Had my first train set back in 1973, Dad made a neat little layout at the time. I bought the 75th anniversary issue of MR, just to see what's what, and the bug came back! So I'm slowly building up my roster, gathering up the materials for my new layout which I hope to start this summer (fingers crossed). Spare room needs filling! Right now, the modest fleet consists of: - Model Power BLW RF-16, B&O (the very first loco from '73 - still runs like a dream). - Athearn EMD SD40-2, CN 5243, zebra stripes, weathered, detailed by previous owner, needs safety cab though. - Athearn EMD GP7, CN 4816, green/gold, partially detailed by previous owner. Renumbered to prototype, replaced motor. - Proto 1000 FM CFA16-4, CN 8720, green/gold. - Athearn FM H24-66, currently N&W 174, scheduled for paint shop to CN 2900 or 3000. Will need some changes to louvers on long hood. - Athearn EMD GP35, formerly SP, currently in paint shop to CN 4000. Except for the Sharknose, I bought all of them recently, second hand. Both FMs were like new in the box, the handrails weren't even put on yet. Future plans include: - Alco RS-3 - An FM switcher - An EMD switcher - EMD F3A/B ... I'm having even more fun now than back then!
:tb-sad: She'll get accustomed to your hobby. My wife is glad about knowing what she can buy for birthday, christmas etc. Not only locos, but cars, structures and other things which I need IMMEDIATELY...

I can only run one at a time.... By the time I get one of the 4-8-8-4's steamed up, I have more fun running it, than have to go steam up another one, and another thing, who is going to run it? It is fun to imagine I am loading the water, oil, setting all the valves, and getting ready to take her out on the 'high iron'. I find it fun to back one slowly out of the roundhouse, and thinking I'm looking at the faces of all the 'Deezul Jockeys' sitting over on the ready track wishing they could sit in my place just once! After being turned, I let them have two short whistle blasts and ease off the turn table. That is one of the 'perks' of being retired; with a roster of more steamers than you could ever get tired of running, then there is the 5 and 8 lash-ups of those painted up motorized peddle cars the big brass like to ride in. It all depends on how you enjoy running your railroad. It is all fun now, every weekend, then back to the wheelchair and the Convalescent Home for another week of therapy and exercise. The train layout gets pretty exciting if you let it! Have fun guys, and don't stand in the Gage or you might loose a toe to a fast N scale passenger train!!!
One SW1200 that had a bad accident when I moved. I sold the other two before moving and made a little layout. That just sits in the corner now. If I can get a job, I've been mostly unemployed for six years, I now have a 11x11 room to use. For now I just live thru you guys.
Most of my locos are dcc and im working on putting decoders in the ones that are still dc however i might have trouble with the older Rivarossi locos , I have two which i havnt been able to identify both are Rivarossi and the same in apperance they look like F7's but not quite , one is Southern Pacific in Daylight colors and the other is Western Pacific in silver and orange paint sceme.
