Over the 5 1/2 decades I been in the hobby the GG1 has always been a modeler's favorite.. Of course the Goo-Goo 1 was fast and sleek.. Another great looking GG1 rendition..
Whatcha go and show this for? I already got too many roadnames I'm interested in - now I'm thinkin I need one of these - sheesh! Gotta buy some lottery tickets...
The Gee Gee - Wun. That GeeGee is; SWEET!! I run just southwestern Liveries;;;;;however,,Huh???? Tempting:tb-confused:
I know that this week in Major League Baseball that two players "ran the cycle" by hitting a single, double, triple and homer in one game, a rarity. But looking and admiring the pictures of the GG1, I realized I "ran the cycle" on this loco. When I was a little doofer, in Pennsylvania, my "big Christmas present" in 1955 was a Lionel GG1 in PRR green. Man it was so heavy for me. Then down here in SoFla, I got a Tyco GG1 in '64 I think, and a Rivarossi GG1 in '85 in HO, and I was thinking I was hot stuff. Then a few years after I got into N, in about 93 I purchased a lot in a box from a guy going out of the hobby, for real cheap, and almost sight unseen, and lo and behold, I discover a Rapido GG1. I since got 2 more at a swap meet in their original box for $23 each. I still have the Rapidos, and the others are long gone, but I still run them on my birthday, Christmas, and other special occasions, with my Kato PRR set, and my ConCor set of PRR smoothsides. Just doesn't get any better....... Congratulatiosn on your new Kato GG1! Ken "FloridaBoy" Willaman
Good thing the Union Pacific never had one of these (did they?) or I'd have to have one. I can't even begin to justify it as I have no catenary, I'm west of the Mississip, the UP didn't have them, I don't model PRR..... Rats, I can't can't even rationalize an irrational rationalization and get away with it. I'm heading for Caboose Hobbies.
I did. The answer is a big no. It would take a complete rebuild to make them live. Parts of the Pantograph are plastic. Like the base and the top plate that would contact the wire. BTW, the DN163K1c decoder needs to be modified a little to work. The motor "wings" need to be rebent to span the motor. Martin Myers
Pantographs are not live, the runners on the top are plastic. But I would think adding a pad might allow you to fineagle power from them. T
I have no interest in the PRR, do not really like electrics, and don't particular fancy that era. That said, I may have to get one of theese because it looks sweeeeeeeeet! Jamie
All these modellers who have no interest whatsoever in anything remotely Pennsy, electric or eastern rushing to the hobby shop to buy GG1's. Who says Kato's marketing dept doesn't know what they're doing?:tb-biggrin:
The grills on the side windows. Were these original equipment, or are they later additions? The local tourist railroad bought two of these, for some unknown reason. Both sat on a siding off the old D&H for years. One is being fixed up for a trip to a museum. I believe the other is awaiting the money to fix it up for another museum. I believe this is one of the most elegant locomotives designed. Just wish I could come up with a reason to own one. Frank
You just answered yourself, have a museum or tourist railroad on your layout, you can have anything you want.
Oh yes you can... There is a very rational way to allow yourself to pleasure of owning one or more GG1's. Let me explain. You are a UP afficionado... and the UP took over the Milwaukee Road which has electrifed lines. All you have to do is rationalize that the UP borrowed some Pennsy GG1's and were hauling them (dead) to the Milwaukee Road to test their efficiency on the electrified lines. See... no reason why you couldn't have a whole fleet of them...
