gentlemen, I am new to this forum as well, say asperitions as flamesfan, I just completed my 2x6 frame, the plywood is waiting to be cut, the legs of the table need to be added and the platform is complete. I do have .5inch pink styrofoam and pl300 caulking. I think the question may have already been asked, what would you all recommend to properly adhere the cork roadbed to the foam? would using the same pl300 caulk be okay? also, I plan on creating a intermodal yrad, I've got all the trains I need, the yard equipment, but what should I use to simulate concrete - paint or something else? anyone's advice would be greatly appreciated

oh, CN is my road of choice, plus FerroMex does plan on making a cameo.

    Canadian or Canadien??????

As to the caulk, I used $.99 USD DAP ALEX brand latex caulk, clear. Very low odor, cleans with water, strong and sets firm in a few hours. It is also easy to remove and cut through. I think any low cost latex caulk will will work.

I have simulated concrete with both plaster and paint on wood. Plaster breaks up. The paint on wood was OK. I have not tried other methods. The one thing I do notice when modelrs build roads is the total lack of attention to details. rarely are the rights of way and shoulders modleed. Rarely are the limitations of the material represented. Concrete roads require forms to be built to hold the concrete. These forms are made out of sheet wood or steel. This usually translates into curves and corners being made out of a series of flat lines connected together, not a smooth curve. There are also the crown agles and expansion strips to consider. Asphalt is an entirely different, "medium" for road construction, and has its own quirks. Because it is laid on a continuous basis, usually without forms, the curves and corners are much smoother. However, I have notice that a ribbon of asphalt will, "wander" more along a straightline than a concrete road would.

My advice, go out and look at roads. Take some photos...you always will see more in photos that you can review over and over. And, don't forget the skid marks.........and maybe a few Yanks in a Camaro being, "interviewed" by the RCMP on the roadside.
