for an ungodly sum and it won't even have working ditchlights.

Does the SD70ACe and the SD70MAC or whatever share the same basic sub structure? i.e. could Kato release it without major retooling of the mechanizm (the shell is different )

Without dimensions, my guess is no. The SD70ACe is noticably larger than the SD70MAC, but shorter than the SD80MAC. Either way, it'd be a heckuva kitbash.
If you do, and stretch a Kato SD70MAC to do it, do it in MRL. They are some sweet engines, they they take CARE of them, unlike UP...:eek:mg:

I mean, how can ya argue with this??

Given just how popular the SD70ACE/SD70M-2 is on top of the UP Heritage schemes I'm guessing it is only a matter of time before Kato or Athearn do these. Athearn said not to look for anything in N-scale that isn't available in HO first when I was at iHobby, so I guess the race is on.

I recently looked into building one myself, but the SD80/90MAC is too big and the SD70MAC is to short. Plus most of the cab would have to be bashed/scratch built as it is pretty unique.

    I stand corrected...

What's your source for this data? I had not seen one nest to a 70MAC, for reference, and had not seen dimensions, either. But yes, the cab and most of the long hood would be a rather radical kitbash.

The 74'3" is the measurement in the Nov 2004 MR, which had plans for the Ace and GEVO. That's over coupler faces. There is a photo on the KatoUSA website, in the users gallery of a kitbashed SD70Ace.

I'm working on a GEVO myself. ALot more of those in Bakersfield than Ace's...

It would be a lot easier job with an SD90MAC-H II shell as a starting point, but unfortunately, Kato only makes the SD80MAC and SD9043MAC.

On another forum, someone noted that Overland has canceled the SD70ACe but that's a simple rumour unless stated on their website. Supposedly Overland had a liscense agreement for exclusive rights for a certain time period on the ACe.

I do think Kato probably has one ready to go once any restrictions per above are out of the way. There are WAY too many good roads to do for this model to not be focusing on it. Of course, there are still dozens upon hundreds of good roads yet to be done for the SD40-2, C44-9W, and AC4400 so I guess that's not a good indicator of Kato's intentions. :eek:mg:

    Hi Guys,

Please note that the OMI SD70ACe's have NOT been cancelled. However, the GE Evolution Series models have.

Yeah, cancel the model that's sold 1000+ units so far...

BTW, anyone modeling these units.. Look for the new dome style they and the SD70ACe's have on the shortly.

In plastic, I would gladly take some CSX SD70ACe's from Kato :)
