Posted on BN a few days back but no reply, going to try here. I was recently in Greybull and wondered what the large industry was at the south end of the yard, anyone know?

Never been there.. I have gone down 20/26 to a ranch for antelope hunts, but where is Greybull? Near Wind River Canyon?

North of the canyon, maybe and hour. Straight across from Buffalo.

Got an answer from Greybull town council. They were 2 large oil refinery's that closed in 1948.

What caused the shutdown? Reserves dried up? Major disaster?

I was just a kid, but I heard that someone made a stupid mistake in Wyoming, (some politician or something) and the refineries were all moved to Billings, so Wyoming lost the revenue that would have resulted from refining their own oil. Hope they do better with all the natural gas they are bringing out. No sense letting Montana have the money.

Forgot to mention. Part of my family still lives in Greybull; well,,,,,,,,the few that are still alive. I lived just 10 miles South, in Basin when I was a kid. I watched the sugar beet loader from my swing set. Age 4 or 5 1957/58.
