Can anyone provide me the RR name and loco type for BLW builders plate number 74402 built June 1949 Thank you in advance! Charlie
According to Kalmbach's "Diesels From Eddystone: The Story of Baldwin Diesel Locomotives", c/n 74402 was a 750-hp switcher (Baldwin called it a DS-4-4-750, DS for Diesel Switcher, 4 axles, 4 motors. 750 horsepower) built for the ATSF in 1949. The original number was ATSF 533 but I have no idea what other numbers it may have worn over the years. Hope this helps.
Hi Charlie/Jon, ATSF BLW DS44-750 (7/49) #533 held that number through her career until 1951 when she was renumbered to #633. Builder numbers were BLW 74394-74401. How 74402 became #533's S/N is a question that may never be known. #533 should be S/N 74401 built 7/49. Maybe bad record keeping? ATSF #533 was then assigned to FM H12-44 (4/53). The 3rd time ATSF used #533, it went to GE B40-8W (10-11/90). I can't find any other info on the disposition of ATSF BLW #633. I guess she was scrapped. ATSF didn't buy many BLW products, only buying 117 locomotives with orders from 1936 to 1950. As for Fairbanks Morse, ATSF only bought 88 units from 1945 to 1957.
