Well, it's only taken I don't know how many years to write it, but I have at last... as promised, warned, or threatened, my Irwin's Journal Online installment about the Legendary Two Guys After Christmas Sale is finally posted to the website: http://www.irwinsjournal.com/ijonline/ijunadvertised.htm Keep in mind that Irwin's Journal Online is a "generalist" site so I do more explaining about, for example, what is N Scale, than might be needed by the typical forum participant here. And what better day to introduce this to the world (ha!) than the Day After Christmas...
Day After Christmas, now that's a hoot. I went over to the IrwinJournal.com. That's more reading then my eyes want to take on. All I can say is this is one year I'm glad Christmas is over. Those who know me, know that isn't like me. A kind of cloud that didn't procuce a Whicte Christmas so it was a harrump Christmas. But, I did get to see a Monday night football game and watched the Baltimore Ravens take the game away from the San Francisco 49'ers. Good job Ravens. Okay all have a Happy New Year. Although I'm not very optimistic about it.
Great story, George. It captures the magic it had for us youngsters when N scale (gauge, then) was still new. BTW, I am writing this from Philadelphia where I am visiting my daughter for two weeks over Christmas/New Years. Doug
Umtrr, I really enjoyed reading your story! It made me think of the "good o' days" as a kid and all the great now gone department stores. The one, Fileneis was I believe on the national news once about their famous "basement clothing sale". Was that the one that didn't have dressing rooms in the basement and even women would remove "articles of clothing" to try on clothes because the sales were final? Today that my be "normal" in some places, but not back then. Ralph
Martin, Yes! Apparently the entire floor was a "try on" venue... There was a documentary filmed about the Filene's Basement sales. It looks like it aired on the Boston PBS station after a premiere at a Boston movie theatre. The film is called "Voices From The Basement." I could not find it online and the website is inactive (at least for me) but here is a short clip that is available.
