Derailment at Leuven, Belgium (click for link) One carriage derailed, turned 180° and fell over on its side. Being hurtled around in that carriage must have been pure horror! Not to mention conducting and see it all happen on the front seat.. One passenger lost his life, one is still at the hospital and 26 other already left the hospital.
Please post any updates to the investigation. We would be curious to know what they determine as to a cause.
Parakiet, thank you for the updates. My sympathy for the family of the deceased, the families of the injured, and the workmen repairing the damages. It must be hard on the line maintainers knowing that the line for which they are responsible contributed to the death of a passenger, and injury to 27 others.
It seems to be 'low profile news' and thank god for that. The authorities aren't pushed to rush findings. [rumors: - an emergency brake while taking a switch might have forced equipment failure. This was partly based on the body that was found under the wreckage. It is now clear that that person was between 2 carriages and was thrown out during the crash (imagine that :| ) - inappropriate speed - the switch could have been thrown/activated with part of the train still on it. edit: to be very clear: this is denied by the railway. technical impossible. ]
Leuven prosecutors say that excessive speed was probably the cause of the train accident that left one person dead and 27 people injured last month. The prosecutor's office has examined the first findings by the rail expert who is analysing the accident.
