I have two of the new Intermountain N Scale SD40-2s with the factory installed ESU sound decoder. I want to run them in a consist, back to back. I use an NCE DCC system and set them up in an advanced consist like I usually do. They run together speed and direction wise, and the horn and bell only work on the lead loco, which is fine. However, I haven't had any luck getting dynamic brakes, independent brakes, drive hold, run 8, or coast to work on both locos. They work on the lead loco but not the trailing one which can be problematic! ESU documentation has info on using CV's 19, 21,and 22 to set up a consist and allow control of these and other functions, but I haven't had any luck with them. Must be like a neophyte trying to decipher legal papers or something. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

It sounds as if you are attempting things correctly. Do the lights work correctly? I always make sure all locos in my consist have CV21/22 set as I want them to act. What you need to do is activate the function keys for when "in consist" for those functions. Usually, only the lead loco responds to functions. If you have JMRI-DecoderPro, this is found on the Consist page. If direct programming, these are "bit flags" in CV #s 21 and 22

    CV 21 controls F1 to F8. F1=1; F2=2; F3=4; F4=8; F5=16; F6=32; F7=64; F8=128
    CV 22 controls F0(f), F0(r), F0-F12. F0(f)=1; F0(r)=2, F9=4; F10=8; F11=16; F12=32

Add the values of the different keys you want active in the sets for CV21 and CV22, and set each CV accordingly

Set CV19 to the consist address in one loco (the one going forward when "forward" is selected on the throttle), and set CV19 to the address + 128 on the one going in reverse.

Just to follow up on Rick's message with some examples (which I often find helpful with this complicated DCC stuff):

Suppose you want F1 to ring both bells in the consist and want F2 to sound both horns. To do this set CV21 = 3 (1 + 2). If you want F8 to activate the sound in both locos along with F1 for the bells and F2 for the horns, program CV21 = 131 (128 + 2 + 1). My recollection is that drive hold is programmed to F9 in the Full Throttle files; if you want F9 to activate Drive Hold on both locos, program CV22 = 4. If you also want F0 to turn on both headlights as well as have F9 activate drive hold, program CV22 = 5 (4 + 1).

    OK?
