Personally I think it's yard heavy for its size. It's nearly one continuous yard with a ton of ladder tracks. On the other hand if you think of it as solely a switching layout with 2-3 switchers and/or road switchers ( Like Alco RS 3s and the like ) I guess this would then be justified.. But, long freights might wind up back from whence they came a bit soon...Do you envision the yards as laden with cars, or sparse ? Full yards indicate the RR is not doing much business and emptier yards the opposite, but then mains will then be car laden going on their journeys to from somewhere. This in turn coagulates the main (not an exactitude, but it's a rough sketch of what I am getting at ).

Thanks for your comments Mark. This is a modern era layout running BNSF and UP through the "racetrack" as it is often referred to. You called it right, I have squeezed in as much as I can in the given space. The layout is solely designed as a switching layout and patterned after the prototype, Eola yard to Cicero yard in Chicago, Illinois. The prototype has a triple mainline. I opted for a double mainline with passing sidings in order to cut down on crossovers. If you Google map the area you will find it is one yard after another the closer you get to Chicago. I will be using the Cicero yard for staging and intermodal overflow. The Eola yard will be used for classification and not laden with cars. Harvest Mill and Dial Corp chemical will each require a dedicated operator to handle plant switching. Eola yard will also have a dedicated operator.

Operations will require all freights coming or going to make one lap over each of the two mainlines before arriving at their industrial destination or back at the Eola yard. You will notice that all but one industry is off the inner main; while the Eola yard is off the outer main. This was not by accident. There will also be commuter and passenger trains running during op sessions to mix it up.
