It's not clear at this point what or when anything will happen with the 19, Ken. The court has rejected Court Hammond's claim and has confirmed Joan's lien. I expect the loco will be up for auction sometime this year as Joan's sister is gravely ill and Joan is going to move to NY to care for her. I'll report more as I find out more.
The 19 is the same locomotive that was used on the Oregon Pacific & Eastern out of Cottage Grove Oregon. It's a great looking locomotive so I hope it gets a good home
I was brought to my attention last night that the YW has a new webpage. You have to go through FB to get to it, and then work your way through the site to find the following info: ============================================================================ Short Description The Yreka Western Railroad Co. (YW, AAR #873) is a Common Carrier Class III (Shortline) railroad serving Siskiyou County California since 1889. Long Description The Yreka Western Railroad (YW, AAR #873) is a Common Carrier Class III (Shortline) railroad serving the Siskiyou County California communities of Yreka and Montague. The YW built an has been operating the rail line since 1889 and interchanges with the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad (CORP) in Montague CA. Conveniently located just off of U.S. Interstate 5 in Northern California, the YW offers “Rail-To-Truck” transloading facilities to our customers not directly located on rail. The YW’s Team is focused on delivering exceptional Customer Service and we welcome the opportunity to serve your company’s rail shipping needs. The YW also offers Intermodal Rail Shipping, Railcar Storage, Railcar Mechanical Services, Industrial Rail Switching, and Track Construction & Maintenance. The YW has mobile crews available for offsite rail services work. In 2017 the YW will be offering tourist rail excursions behind its famous 1915 Baldwin-built, Mikado #19 Steam Locomotive, nicknamed “Pancho”. The #19 has starred in many Hollywood films, most recently “Emperor of the North” and “Stand By Me”. Stay tuned for the details of these exciting steam excursions planned for 2017. Mission The Yreka Western Railroad (YW) has been proudly serving the Siskiyou County California communities of Yreka and Montague, as well as, the Shasta Valley since 1899. ============================================================================ I'm at a loss to figure out what this all means when in the paragraph that states, "In 2017 the YW will be offering tourist rail excursions behind its famous 1915 Baldwin-built, Mikado #19 Steam Locomotive, nicknamed “Pancho”." Number 19 is no longer in the ownership by Court Hammond and the YW. She remains locked up in the engine house, disassembled and in need of major work! There is only one rail car remaining on the line, (it too does not belong to the YW) and it has been ruined by vandals. Rail has been removed to a great extent with nowhere to run around a consist even if they had one! I see this website as a possible ploy to exploit "investors" as has been the practice in the past. So don't hold yer breath!
It, (the above) ain't gonna happen! Here's the latest: The auction sale of the historic and famous #19, a 1915 Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado will be held by the Siskiyou County Sheriff at the Yreka Western's engine house on 6 October 2016. Inspection of the loco will be at 0900 hours, prior to sale. It will be a sad day to see her leave.
She's worn out. Needs major rebuild: New firebox and bricks; frame and running gear, (has a cracked cylinder head); the mud-ring needs to be welded or replaced; plus tubes will have to be replaced in the next couple of years ... if not sooner! I can't recall the year we re-tubed her, but it was a couple of years before I retired in 2007. Additionally, the tender needs work as it has a leak allowing water to get into the oil tank. Whom ever wins the bid will have to have very deep, filled pockets! She can't be relocated by rail unless she rides a heavy-duty flat.
One of my new neighbors is an organizer of the State of Jefferson film fest and expressed a great deal of interest in some of railroad related assets that help make the area compelling for things like film crews. He's had more interest in the McCloud, but I'm going to make sure he's aware of this. Doubt he has deep pockets, but he does have an interest in thing that are good for Sisykou county. Number 19 was sold at auction this morning for the sum of $400,000. She was purchased by Jerry Joe Jacobson who owns the Age of Steam Museum in Sugar Creek, Ohio. It is not known if the 19 will be used in service, or simply to occupy a space in the museum roundhouse. Well ... at least the drama is finally over. Oh yeah; one more thing ... yesterday Court Hammond had the rails torn out right in front of the engine house in an effort to keep the buyer from moving the locomotive out of the engine house. What a turkey!
that's cold hearted since she will have a good home now jerry will have to enuff track to load locomotive onto a truck or flatcar if there still rail access to site
If this link works, our colleague Ironhorseman can be seen in one of the photos, Siskiyou newspaper. Yreka's Old No. 19 steam engine headed to Ohio [www.siskiyoudaily.com] OK, didn't work. Let's try [www.siskiyoudaily.com] neither work. Go find trainnews. org and there is an article there with the link to the paper.
Let us try once more. http://www.siskiyoudaily.com/article/20161007/NEWS/161009765 That one works. There are < and > on each side of the first photo that comes up. Use them to find the one of Bill K.
