There are more SD40-2's too MRL, KCS, and a Yello Belly I use as a Pool unit with my Espee Tunnel Motors. There are four C&NW SD40--2's I didn't photo
For this Monday, 13 June 2016, I present the Athearn SW1000, 96 dressed in anniversary colors. I detailed this one a bit too.
Built a gaggle of these BN SD40-2's over the years, still one of my favorite locomotives. This one an old blue box with brass handrail stantions and brass wire bent for handrails, the front porch modified with the correct ant-climber. All the usual details added as well as a Radiator section from a RRP SD 45 shell. Tried to make the mods to the top of the shell where the Caterpillar exhaust was, to match some photos I have seen. Scalecoat paint Microscale and some of my own decals A pic of the prototype SD40C-2 6330 http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDRBLD/SD40C/6330.HTM http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/bn/bn6330eha.jpg Here is mine, i need to get some better lighting to take photos indoors. Thanks for looking.
This an early Blue Box Athearn. That I did some years ago again all the usual details, I dont care for the plastic handrails sometimes as they for one thing flimsy and another they are always too short resulting in some stantions not being straight up and down. Anyway Scale coat paint and Microscale decals, weathered and a good locomotive, The thing that really sets this SD40-2 apart is it was one time refitted with some ex-Santa Fe Siler-ish trucks. Here are a couple photos I took. First one was at Plainview in 1997-8 a vew years and pounds ago LOL. The second was at Glenwood springs CO 1998 you can see the Silver-ish trucks. And here is mine. Thanks for stopping by
There are 2 things that may appear White in the step wells. 1 being the step light fixture, these are also operational, and on anytime there is voltage going to the loco. 2 is a White-ish square decal that was applied to some locos, it is a safety thing about getting on and off equipment. I try to make all the step lights operational on locos I build as it gives them a certain realistic look when operating in dim light conditions.
I don't like the plastic handrails either. There was Rail Detail that made wire handrail sets but I can't find them now. I used their handrail set for the SD45--2 I did in MRL
So it does. I'll have to look for a replacement. Detail somebody might make one. I didn't notice it when doing the photo. Thanks
I couldn't agree more about the flimsy Athearn plastic handrails. I'm always on the hunt for Smokey Valley stanchions so I can roll my own.
