As a dumb teenager a bunch of us ran across this trestle in about 1962. So I know it fairly well. Sort of a "Stand By Me" movie thing. Sad to see this beauty go. Jim
The 4449 used to participate in the Sherwood Cruisin' car show for a few years, and was the guest of honor. In 2006, after admiring Chris Fussell's photos from the previous year, I staked out a location in the field below that trestle to film the 4449 arriving. I waited over 4 hours due to dispatching and other problems, but managed to shoot 4449 crossing that trestle, which is now history.
Lots of PNWR looks like a Garden Railroad. Rex Hill has been out of service for a long time. I think that 4449 was one of the last moves over the line not involving car storage. Still persistent rumors of commuter rail extension, but were that to happen, the trestle would be replaced anyway. There's no freight justification T run that part of the line ever since PNWR took on all of the OE.
It turned out that kids playing with fireworks in the grass and weeds under the trestle caused the fire.
