On the one hand, it's good that the Vomit Bonnet is gone. On the other hand, it's still a Warbonnet which is better than a bunch of Heritage Pumpkins (aka, Great Northern+ Cigar band son not even the GN fans are happy. Having said that. It's probably worth pointing out that just having bright colors alone shouldn't qualify something as gaudy.
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293406&nseq=144 I have to credit Terry Respondek engaging the railfan community along several of his operations but geez-a-whiz, tone it down a little! http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=296693&nseq=136 Equally bad on the other end of the spectrum. Of course gaudy all a matter of opinion...
I'll add these bnsf and SP locomotives not forgetting about the FEC red and yellow locomotives which I think have a silver stripe separating the yellow from the red. see photo 4. Tom 1> 2> 3> 4> Note : 2 and similar painted locomotives
Looks similar to the old Illinois Terminal color. But I agree, (at least in this one photo), that is bright!
Oh no, the my hood units look mighty fine up close and personal. Not my favorite scheme, but not bad for a tourist operation.
This paint scheme said nothing but business going on here. I liked it. I would've liked to of seen this paint scheme become the point locomotive on their officers fleet of passenger cars. A unmistakable identity and statement as to what two railroads merged. I was disappointed when they backed off and away from it. Gosh, you want gaudy you got it with the great pumpkins that now roam the BNSF empire. The first pumpkins out reminded me of the Great Northern but todays paint scheme...YUCK! You won't find them roaming around my model railroad. Three of these as pictured above, on the point of their official passenger train would catch my attention. But we can't do that. Someone on TB might not like it.
My biggest complaint as the lettering on the hood. Otherwise, it did not look bad. I never understood why folks disliked it so much.
I always thought it was gaudy. Actually I may have been somewhat biased against anything other that a red and silver warbonnet. Well, maybe I would let the yellow and blue cub scout warbonnet slide. Kodachrome was definitely out.
I'm no different. The red and silver war bonnet paint scheme was in my opinion the paint scheme for Santa Fe's Finest Passenger Trains. When Mike Haverty, brought them back on the freight units, The Super C and others. I wasn't to sure about that. Nobody thought to ask me.... The SPSF yellow war bonnet and daylight colors was a merger statement, I would of liked to see go through. Of course to be tamed down later. It was gaudy, but no more so then those danged orange pumpkins running around. The key to any railroads that have merged was/is to find a paint scheme that speaks to all the railroads that merged into one conglomerate. BN, had a serious problem making that happen. Silver and Gray, Sky Blue and White, Orange and Pullman Green, SP&S and NP colors, and if you've done your homework, railroad history, you can see that it wasn't going to be easy to come up with a paint scheme, that could speak to all of them. Sigh! On a visit to a friends wedding in Portland, I discovered there was a real push to get rid of the railroads. Get rid of what? I asked. One of the major ports and they want to get rid of the railroads. There is always a group of gumbies out there wanting to do something stupid. Uhh...err...as I see it. And, of course they (whoever they is) being overly opinionated. It is what it is and thank the Great Railroad Overseer, we still have todays freight haulers.
Honestly, GN colors with ATSF font and Cigar Band was probably as good a compromise as you can get. I hate it, because what makes the GN so special, they'd already been dead for decades. Why not a classic Cascade Green and black Warbonnet? Or BN Scheme with ATSF Yellow and Blue? Something that spoke to the 2 actual railroads merging. Going back into the back of the paint shed and pulling out the GN colors was what irked me. ANd yeah, the Vomit bonnet wasn't that Horrible, but I think my problem was that I was never a fan of them putting the BN executive paint on the MACs in the first place. I liked Cascade Green and Black. I still do. Simple nice colors. I liked Kodachrome in the sense that I liked seeing random kodachrome in an all Gray and Scarlet or all Cub Scout consist. My opinion may have changed if I'd had to see it and nothing else.
Well put YoHo. But do me a favor. You don't tell a retired mortician that something is dead. I was all set to load the first call wagon and head out. Had my heart racing and the cash register jangling ja-ching. Of course you did say "Dead for decades" never a truer statement.
This is one of the few BNSF schemes I like, besides the remaining Super Fleets. I think a SD70ACe would look nice in it. A-B-B-A GP60M's would defiantly be interesting in this scheme!
Maybe a few other cars could be added and then you would have a real-life version of the Lionel Girl's Train.:teeth:
The cringe-worthy Vomit Bonnet- yecchh! From what I understand, it's been painted into another scheme.
