NYC RS-32 where I added the lift rings and grabs to the plain jane Atlas Trainman model, also changed the 3 chime horn supplied with the engine for the two blat horns that the NYC used. Also installed a Sinclair Antenna on the cab roof. Painted Black with White Frame Stripe and lettered with Microscale Decals. Rick J
Some great Locomotive modeling here. I really enjoy seeing all the modeling efforts here, Great to see that there are still some folks that like to build, detail, paint, decal and weather their models. Just wish I had more time to keep up with all the posts! Thanks to all.
I am posting part of my fleet of Alcos. When I decided to freelance, I wanted to give my locomotives a "family" look, and came up with this paint job. These were done over 20 years ago. These are Atlas locomotives, purchased when they first came out. As old as they are, they all still operate flawlessly. Detail items were such as grab irons, air hoses, safety striping to spruce up the stock undecorated locomotives. Growing up with the railroad, I saw many different diesels, but there were no Alcos in my particular area and I just like the looks of them and they ended up being my choice of power, but there are a few EMDs also in the fleet.
For me that is the best part, to make a standard model into a one of a kind replica as close to a prototype photo as I can get. Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
Yep I agree, I enjoy that the most as well. Although our numbers seem to be dwindling. I never realized American Railroading had as many modelers across the pond(s) either, that's very interesting. Know of a couple guys here locally that model railroads from across the pond(s) as well, great models.
While working in Nebraska 15-16 years ago, we had a GE lease fleet Alco that came in DIC, I have to say no one working the fuel pad knew how to start it. We call an old head out of the roundhouse to look it over, he reset the over speed started her up, and she left town making smoke. No telling how long is was towed dead. A very interesting loco indeed. Everything was built so heavy duty, it looked like a brute.
Going back to Basic Black, here is a Stewart U25B - PH IV unit that I did adding GE style lift rings, Sinclair Antenna, removing the dynamic brake grids in the see through panels and adding MU hoses and cut levers. Painted with Scalecoat II Black and Floquil Socony Red Paint, lettered with Microscale Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J
Very nice Rick, Crisp lines and great details. I have yet to try and install GE type lift rings. You have done a great job of it. A colorful engine and should wear it's grime well considering the colors. You just can't go wrong with Black for a primary locomotive color can you? The US Eastern roads had some color varieties for sure, back in the day. A nice looking locomotive, looks like you spent some time on it. Thanks for sharing the photos. Always glad to see others modeling efforts.
Here is my Tyco GP20 Durango Diesel. I was digging around in my junk box and came across the Tyco. I tested the motor with a 9 volt battery as it had no wheels. It ran but than the shaft that the large gear fits on just broke off. I dug around some more and found a shark nose Tyco Diesel with no rear trucks. I pulled that motor out and put it in the GP20, oiled and greased it up and away she went. That motor was sitting in my attic since the mid 80's. It is a smooth runner but I am missing the side truck covers on one side (don't know the correct term) and the rubber tires are not that great. Just need to find handrails now. I was going to put the motor in another gp20 that I am painting a gold color and will put my on RR name on it but the Durango look to good running down the track to part it out. I painted the caboose already. Now to find a motor for it.
Going away from the basic black, here is an EMD GP38-2 that I did. This engine was the former DT&I Bi-Centinniel Unit #1776. It was supposed to be numbered #228 before being done as the Bi-Centenniel Unit. When it was repainted instead of the DT&I Orange and Black, it was done in the new owners GT Blue and Orange. Per Jim Hedigers article in Model Railroader I added the details that spelled out a DT&I unit of the 3 window all weather window on the engineers side, gong bell on the nose, spark arrestors and fire cracker antenna. Painted the unit with Floquil GTW Blue and Amtrack Red and lettered with Herald King Decals. Rick J
That is a cool looking Durango unit - even better that you were able to resurrect it from the dead! I just realized I don't have a single GP-20 in my roster...going have to correct that soon.
Loving all the detailed and custom painted locos on here! I'm no detailer or custom painter though. Modelled on Guilford's shoddy example, this is my ex Santa Fe SD26, complete with hand-painted blue line along the nose and side, and ST [Springfield Terminal] under the cab window. Mike
WOW .. That is an awesome looking SD with the air tanks and details. Love the "used" look. Excellent work!
I agree a great locomotive, scene and picture looks really good. Now thats some great modeling for sure!
That takes me back to my Belgian layout. Great to operate at exhibitions! Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using tapatalk 4 beta
