As with most of us I suspect, I have had a long love affair with model railroading. Up until a few years ago, I was introduced to model railroading by a friend of mine in Portland, OR. At the time I was unable to have an indoor layout of any size. So I went outdoors. For the past 4-5 years I've been running a garden railroad in 1:20.3 scale on 45mm track. We recently moved back down to Sacramento from Portland so now I am without a railroad of any scale. I intend on a new layout in our backyard. I specialize in custom weathered engines and rolling stock. Especially kit builds from Phil's Narrow Gauge which are all wood, brass and white metal. But then comes the rain.... So I've moved indoors for the winter and realized that I'm still missing indoor excitement. As with many other I have met, choosing a scale is not always easy as I love them all for various reasons. But unless I had infinite space and unlimited budget I cannot model all scales. So I've settled on N. This is because of the space requirements needed for a realistic layout in my case work well and because I can still have DCC/Sound. The next steps are determining the right layout for me. I've been working on this step for weeks now without conclusion. My blog can be found here: http://tobysgardenrailroad.blogspot.com/
Welcome to TrainBoard! I have been following your planning topic. It will be interesting to see how everything comes together.
Welcome to Trainboard. I did the opposite and moved from Cali to Oregon. Be sure to check out the 12 inch to the foot scale stuff at the California State Railroad Museum. I have lots of great memories of two Railfairs there.
I'll add my welcome too! The CSRM is a wonderful location. I lived in Citrus Heights for several years back in the 60's, and belonged to a MR club in Roseville. A great bunch of guys there! At that time, there was also another club in downtown Sacto. You might also check out the park in Folsom. They had large scale operation there too. Good luck!
Robert, Niceeeeee work on the saddle tank...and 20.3 is awesome size indeed . Welcome to TB and we like lots of photos and such . If you rail fan , we like anything rail road, even train chasing motive power, especally videos .
Hello from Alameda! I've got the N scale bug too (for 15 years now), and am coming up to visit my brother-in-law and his recently discovered bug/N-pire on Monday. If there's time I'll hit CSRM too, what a place! Glad to have another Nor-Cal guy here!
You are correct. Since I love all scale of model railroading the sky is the limit for me in terms of interest. There is also a 7.5 scale in Rancho Cordova. Looking forward to seeing that this summer. Other than my N scale layout, I hope to get to my 20.3 live steam in the garden this summer too.
After I have a layout to run at home I might entertain the idea of a free mo module. Interesting concept and opportunity to meet new folks.
Hi, I'm a member of the Roseville Roundhouse Model Railroad club. We're HO and N. Lately the HO has been attracting more members, but we do have a core of n scalers and a fixed layout for them. Even if you aren't interested, you're always welcome to stop by on a Tuesday or Saturday morning.
