Density = Activity I love the density and intensity of activity represented in these photos. The whole layout looks even larger than it is. Thanks for the pixs showing the relationship between the different buildings when placed next to each other... it gives a better perspective on how they look near each other. BTW... some of us could probably name our cities 'Waltherville'...
Walthers’ Superior Paper with a few additions to spruce it up. I’m still working on the backdrops and surrounding scenery. Here’s another Walthers’ Paper mill kit chopped-up and recreated to be the “Lost Coast Brewery”. You people are going to get real tired of me because of this topic.
SD90ns... It's amazing how much modeling you've packed into an 11' x 11' room. Your layout would be a tremendous selling point for N Scale... to convince those who have not decided whether to do N scale or other larger scales. When I was a kid... I was very prolific builder of plastic model boat, plane, auto & military vehicle kits. I seldom varied from the stock kit... but every so often I would and they were the models I cherished the most. I'm sure if I kitbash the railroad structures I have... it would be very fulfilling too. I really need to get to it again. Thanks for everyones inspirational photos... keep it up... I can use the encouragement!
Here is the substructure of the Walthers 24 stall Roundhouse along with the Walthers 130' turntable and Machine Shop on the "new" JJJ&E. Each add-on Walthers stall kit for the Roundhouse has three stalls.
Flash: I do have a very large roster of steam locomotives. The completed substructure with the pits wasn't easy to place into the foam as each pit area had to be cut out of the foam before the pit's were cemented in place on the Roundhouse floor.
This thread has really been great, I like it. I dont have any photos to share but I have a few of their kits that I was working on before I got deployed. And I am plesaed with them. I use them on my N and HO layouts.
Nice to see JJJ&E coming to life! Hello Bob... Great to see the JJJ&E' newest incarnation is well under way! I also have the 130' TT and 18 stalls to build. I really appreciate this photo as it really shows the arrangement of the interior posts. Since I too use Unitrack... what is the radius for the run-around track going behind the roundhouse? It looks like it could be 19" radius. Also... it appears that a minimum 42" wide benchwork (48" would be better) will be required for an arrangement as you've shown... rignt? Keep them great photos coming!
The width of the bench work in the turnaround area actually measures 50 inches and is the shape of a wheel. I used easements in designing the two run around tracks. The outer loop is 23-24 inches and the inner loop is 21 inches. The easements were constructed with 28 1/4 inch radii, 19 inch radii and some straight sections. The rest of the layout uses 28 1/4 inch radii except in the two turnaround areas where I used a combination of 19" and 28 1/4 " curved sections. Glad the photo's help you. I have more in the "Completed BenchWork of The JJJ&E" thread in N scale forum.
Keep the pictures coming :thumbs_up:What a fantastic job on all those structures! Keep the pictures coming!:tb-ooh:
Those are Walthers pits Tad that came with the Add-On stall kits.. I'll be using the Peco code 80/55 in the stalls and out to the lip of the turntable. I also use the Peco flex track into the turntable from the switching yard.
I'm glad you mentioned the track being used inside the roundhouse and leads to and from the turn-table. I was thinking Atlas code 80 flextrack... so Peco code 55 would be a better alternative. Are you connecting to the Unitrack using the Kato adapter track... which is made for Atlas code 80? Getting back to the run-around track... I guess the 19" radius isn't big enough to go around the roundhouse...
Jose: The 19" radii curves will make it around the Roundhouse. I'm not using the Kato adapter track for the two tracks into the turntable from the yard. I'm not a big fan of Atlas code 80 track. The Peco track will be used in each stall and then continue to the lip of the turntable. With the flex track, you just cut a piece that will fit from the stall to the lip of the turntable.
Thanks, Bob. I am thinking of using the Peco pits for the pit track where my wood chip hoppers are unloaded in Pile Yard and was wondering if you had any knowledge/recommendations about them.
Tad: I'm sure you can use the Peco pits in that situation. You could also make your own pits with styrene and strip wood to your own specifications. The pits that I used for the Walthers Roundhouse stall add-ons came with each add-on kit. It was interesting cutting out the foam for 24 pits. I first worked with 9 units of stalls and then did 15 units at once.
There aren't too many Walthers kits on my layout that are built as-is. I have altered a lot of them and most are only positioned and not fully detailed yet. Here is part of a Superior Paper factory that I have hacked into what will eventually be a (Duraflame) fire log factory. still very much a work in process. Here is an altered Medusa Cement plant which will be used as part of a larger facility which makes concrete barriers and other formed parts made of concrete. This is the whole facility which shows the Glacier Gravel Co. which again, has been severely shortened and altered along with many additions.
