Well I got alot done on the layout today but not too many photos.I got 90% of the track down so I decided to do a little test running.I plug up the DCC and boom I have a short.I worked on it for 3 hours this morning until I realized it was my new "METAL" track bumper that I didnt isolate. What an idiot I am.So I got the track work running good so I went back to my first area of scenery and decided to do a little detail work. Here is the are I worked on. I wanted to do a few things so I added the safety stripes on the truck bumpers on the building.Next I added some rust chalk to the building but not too much as this is a fairly new building on the N&E.I also added a little dirt chalk to the bottom of the building.Next I added some weeds to the edge of the building and also some ivy to the BLMA fence.I also dusted in some grass on the spur but not too much as their will be alot of car swapping at PFG warehouse.I still have to add the sign to the building but that will be later.I would also like to add more detail to the construction scene but that will be later as well. Here is a photo of the area after the work was done.Enjoy... The glue was still wet when I shot the photos.
Tonight I got some more scenery done but the glue was wet so I didnt get any pictures. While the glue was drying I decided to get one of my new shiny boxcars and do some decals and weathering. Here is a photo of the boxcar out of the box; I took some Micro-scale graffiti decals and applied them and hit it with some dull-coat.I then applied some Bragdon Enterprise chalks and brushed on different dirts and rust and now have a boxcar that will be allowed on the layout. Here is the finished look. What a difference 30 minutes makes to the plastic look. All for now.
Very nice progress that you are making there. that boxcar that you did looks really nice. Thanks for the updates.
Thanks Matt, the boxcar is an Atlas.Speaking of, here it is taking its place on the layout at PFG. Hopefully I can get May Hosiery Building painted this week and have it in place this weekend so I can start getting more pictures than PFG.Also I will have my final track plan with building placements posted tomorrow. All for now...
OK I finally got around to finishing my layout plan on paper and into CAD here at work. When you open it up you will see the two sides complete and two sides that say "future expansion".The layout one day will be a complete loop but for now I am just concentrating on the two sides I have built. All for now...
Thanks Wolfgang.I enjoy doing that more than anything in the hobby. Here is the track plan that I am thinking of doing on the "Future Expansion" areas of my layout. What do you guys think?
That's a lot of operation. But where's the connection to the old layout? If this is only the expansion? What's your minimum radius? Wolfgang
Well right now all I have is two sides that I am working on.The other two sides(Houses and Yard) will be the expansion areas in the future. But right now I am happy with the two legs I have done and running point to point.
Alright the May Hosiery building is done finally after two weeks painting and assembly but it is finally done and installed on the layout.I am thinking of changing the name of this building but to what I dont know yet?Any ideas?Maybe the POD warehouse?Anyways here is the photo; Also got a photo of a few cars ready to be spotted but it looks as if the graffiti artist have gotten to them first.
Thomas your layout is coming along great! You do some excellent modeling. I cant wait to see some more progress As for the warehouse, i like the PODS idea. That would be neat to make a PODS yard and surround it by barbed-wire chain-link fence! Some roll off trucks and flatbeds, with a forklift or 2 and a bunch of the POD containers, and that would be a eye catching scene!
Thanks Josh and yes I have decided on the Pods warehouse. And thanks for bumping this thread up I have new photos and will post them soon.
Sounds awesome Thomas, cant wait to see some more pics let me know if you need a source for some more BLMA PODS containers
I do actually need some more.I only have a few so far. However after looking at some of your photos I want to talk to you about building some kits. You do awesome work. You know that is the one thing in this hobby that I do not enjoy. For some reason building kits is at the bottom of my list.My layout would be alot further on completion if I had someone to build them for me.LOL
Thomas, Your loayout looks great! You have inspired me to start my own, operations oriented layout after not having layout for way too long. You have aslo given me an idea about how to avoid shorts with my new DCC system. I am going to try and have the discipline to write down everything in a notebook that I do to the layout in order to trouble shoot any future problems. Please keep the pictures coming!
Hey Thomas, Thanks for the kind words on my modeling work Building kits and kitbashing is something i really enjoy, so i guess were the opposite in that department LOL I can certainly do some custom building projects for you. Which kits are you looking for to add to your layout? Walthers currently has a TON of there HO Cornerstone Series kits on sale right now.
