I have started scanning my steam pics. First lot are up and are between February 1958 and July 1959. My first cameras were not the best, so some of the scans are rather fuzzy. But all the shots are unrepeatable.......... http://alansgallery.fotopic.net/c1658797.html A sample:
9Fs while they were still new, and Liverpool Street station. J69 0-6-0T 68619 :: 0072.jpg :: Fotopic.Net might be the cleanest steam engine I've ever seen outside of preservation. Not being a British railway expert, I see quite unfamiliar classes, and I'm reminded just how much there was to see then.
Yes, that J69 was kept in superb condition for station pilot duties. Not many locos were kept that clean. There was a huge variety of locomotive types back then. Now that is not the case.
are you scanning off prints or negs? I am going to start scanning my british steam black and white in soon but haven't decided whether to get a scanner capable of handling my 6x7cm and 6x9cm negs or doing it off the best prints. I have got about 3,500 to go at so it should keep me quiet for a while! Having said that I am still sorting and captioning all the stuff I shot in Thailand last time.
Ken, virtually all the locos you will see in my steam scans are scrapped. One J69 is preserved, but don't think it was that one. Thankfully we do have a huge collection of preserved locomotives, both in the National Collection and those on preserved railways and by private individuals.
Kev, I am scanning off prints. I would rather scan negs. but I do not have them here as they are on permanent loan to someone who sells rail photograph prints and sometimes gets some published. So either way, many people are able to share my old photos. My scanner will scan prints, 35mm slides or negatives, also 2" x 2" negatives/slides. I also have thousands to scan, so I will also be kept busy!
Sad. Very sad. From what I can gather, reading topics, magazines, etc, you've done a better job of preservation that we have over here. But it's still sad to know they're gone. Boxcab E50
Very nice collection, Alan. Looking forward to more. How I lament my lack of perception about what was going on with the steam to diesel transition in the USA back in the '50's. I was doing a bit of photography, but unfortunately not of the railroads. :tb-sad:
Another collection of pictures now published. June/July 1960. http://alansgallery.fotopic.net/c1661979.html
Some more images added to the first steam gallery, including the one below, which was my very first photograph of a steam locomotive! Taken in September 1957. Others here: http://alansgallery.fotopic.net/c1658797.html
Alan: I always enjoy the older UK locomotives. I am a part of a small group (US, UK, Italy) that "accumulates" the pre-war 5, 7 & plank N Scale coal wagons. My next visist to the uK will include a tour of a few of the layouts of the pre-war railroads.
Another collection has now been uploaded. Taken between July and December 1960. http://alansgallery.fotopic.net/c1665943.html Sample:
