First I had seen those cars, Ben, not before in a book, either. Were they NG or SG? They could have been used nearly anywhere on the system. Possibly towed by speeders. Moffat Tunnel prolly wouldn't have seen these during its construction--Denver & Salt Lake built it. D&RGW wasn't interested in the D&SL until the MT was completed thru the Divide. That said, those cars may have D&SL heritage, but as weathered as they are, there's likely no way to tell. If they had D&SL roots, they could have been used in MT construction, but that's pure speculation on my part.
Hemi I believe it was a standard gage car. I'll have to take a closer look the next time they have the museum to verify this. Unfortunately the museum is feeling the economy and is only open during scheduled events. Ben
ARR 95304 Found at Fairbanks AK on Feb. 14, 2012. Though lettered ARR, I believe this car is one of the ex-DRGW 50000 series GB gons built in the '40s. Hiroshi
I finally stopped in at Antique Row in Montrose, CO to capture a few photos of these survivors. D&RGW 5604 D&RGW 3133 Ben
I didn't either until this trip. They were stenciled on both ends of the car as well as above the side doors. Ben
This photo from the Library of Congress collection shows loading a reefer during WWII. The first time I noticed numbers on the inside.
I have seen examples where this inside stencil was done. But I've never bothered to ask about the reasoning involved. Anyone know for certain? Surely it is for something other than some unexpected loss of the exterior markings.
Well, my guess is in a cramped loading area, you may not be able to see the car side--you might have the car spotted with the door opening at the warehouse door. You would have to ensure you are loading the cargo into the correct car. With interior stenciling, I think that may have been a reason.
Somebody's been hiking in my backyard and looks to have been having a great time - Great Stuff Russ!!!!!!!
