Still the case in Québec, where not only do they tax gas as the federals do, but tax the federal tax (what's colloquially called the "elevator tax"). In total, all the taxes amount to far more than the cost of the gas alone...
That's just plain adorable! Just don't huff what's coming out of the tailpipe... And 70 octane gas! There's a reason to make one's engine do knock-knock jokes...
Hmm! In that year I was 10. I didn't pump gas but got down the hose and nozzle from the two 55gallon drums up on the stand to fill up the tractors. And went out to the fields. Life sure was different back then.
"propensities"? In the summer of '60 I learned how to drive the new '60 Corvair and then when I turned 13 I got my farm drivers license. I could even drive the '46 Dodge 1 ton pick up into the feed mill on the far side of the city. The city chief of police was not happy about that. I was only 4'9" at the time. That was far more fun than I have now.
I was 12 years old in '47 learning to drive with a Willys Jeep top-down "sports-car" on private roads in New Hampshire. The one thing I learned quickly was not to wave at a favorite cousin while heading towards an apple tree. Missed it, but "harvested" and apple. Lesson learned for a lifetime.
Better set that parking brake while filling up..... Googled Stone City, CO. There is zero there now, just a highway and dust!
I looked it up on a recent map, and it's now inside the southern end of Fort Carson Military Reservation, northwest of Pueblo. The best and sharpest imagery on Google Earth is from October 2011. There seems to be some vestiges of structures around, but that's it. Even the tumbleweeds don't visit there. Sand, dust, shrubbery, a few trees... Maybe even the ghost of the postmaster...
Cleveland, Texas. It was probably taken in the 1920s. Many owners had living spaces behind such stores or upstairs or, in this case, attached to the side. Two gas pumps that probably read regular and "high test" or Ethel. Also beside the entry looks to be a "coal oil" container with a pump for lighting the lamps.
