This is a 6-pack. They do sell individuals if you need 7 (6+1). https://www.trainworld.com/kato-11-212-version-2-lighting-set-w-white-led-6-kato-11-212.html
I took the easy way out, instead of the Big Boy, I opted for the Big BLow Diesel from Scale Trains with the DCC Sound factory installed.
Some additional thoughts: While the motors are indeed synchronized, it is still uncertain as to whether or not one or two decoders is necessary for dual motor operations. As Kato's engineering for the Big Boy is quite revolutionary in N-Scale, from what I have been reading, how you synchronize two motors to one decoder is still unknown. If you are solely looking into DCC operations for sound purposes, I forgot to mention an alternative option, the Kato N and HO scale Analog Sound Box, which can be used with standard DC power packs on non-DCC equipped layouts. Along with a wide range of diesels, selectable sounds appropriate for the UP Big Boy, UP FEF-3, SP GS4, and other lighter steam locomotives can be added to the Sound Box by purchasing optional sound cards.
I am mostly interested in DCC to have more than one train on the same track/ layout. And the other features and sound are a nice bonus. I am just getting started in N scale so I do not have much invested in DC. That's nice you can add the sound box with DC I didn't know that was an option. The dual motor concept is interesting on the control side of things, I hope it works out. I have a few months to cancel before it is in stock Speaking of DC, basically my only investment is my FEF-3. I have a Question regarding it, probably should be on another thread but here it is. Want to covert it to DCC. So if I install the Digitrax SDXN147K4 on my FEF-3, will this convert the Loco to DCC? or does this only do the sound and would need another decoder? It's called a Sound Decoder so I'm not sure. I like the Digitrax because it is a doable install on this Locomotive. link below to the Sound Decoder, and link to an install video. The video shows the previous version Decoder, on the Digitrax site it directs you to the new version. Just one digit difference on the part number. The old one is SDXN146K4. Nice looking Diesel, I will need a Diesel next. I looked out of curiosity they are sold out, I can see why.
The Digitrax SDXN sound decoder is a DCC decoder with sound so you are good to go if you want to convert to DCC AND sound.
I'd be careful to avoid flexing (bending) the decoder board (shown in video) during handling & installation, which is very hard on component solder joints!
I had a fun discussion with MTNTrainman this morning about this train, it is very long so there is a need for a fairly large layout, or the only thing you could pull behind this behemoth would be just a caboose on a small test track.... I am tempted to put mine on the test track just pulling a caboose for the sake of the entertainment factor....
Well, lets see it.. I just received my UP The Excursion set, they are some long cars. Glad I got them though, they are nice. I am having a hard time with installing the LED lights. Will do another post for that.
