I'm probably bending the rules here, these images of the Magic City Express 2 years ago this week: So to make this prototype-legit, here's an eastbound CP train 198 (Vancouver-Chicago intermodal) at the Railroad Museum of Minot at first light, same week 2 years ago.
Seen these while surfing the internet Figured that since Memorial Day Weekend these are appropriate Both Patriotic Conrail Locomotives Have a Wonderful Weekend everyone...
Caught Monday evening in low light, a very late 12R led by the 1065 Savannah & Atlanta heritage unit. My decade-old small-frame DSLR was out of breath at 6400 ISO and 1/500. It'll go higher, but I thought it best not to. To think that with Kodachrome I was held to 64!
Amazing how high ISO modern cameras can go... I can usually shoot ISO 5000 without too much detracting noise, but at 6400/8000, it gets really noticeable. At ISO 10000+ most images are unusable due to noise degradation, even on here.
Yesterday evening's westbound NS H31 at Wernersville, PA, was bracketed by a pair of heavily rebuilt units. NS 5659 started off as a LV GP-38AC before being rebuilt into a GP-38-2. Trailing unit NS 5801 was originally a Southern GP-50 before rebuilding as a GP-38-3. Thanks to Chris Toth's excellent website for the locomotive history.
Some nice photos! The Wernersville sequence is pretty good. There's some nice architecture around to frame the train. Sorry... My bad... I left my shrink ray on and it was pointed at the train. It used to be full size, so you're covered.
When thinking of today's ISO ranges with digital cameras, a friend reminded me that sometimes the good old days weren't so good. Digital photography's future is in mirrorless camera bodies. Given the limited specifications of my old Nikon D5100 and my frustrations with it sometimes, I sometimes think about looking into a new camera, but at 65+ years old, I then wonder how much longer I'm going to be able to railfan. It's a stupid way to think, as I still enjoy it, even though I'm less willing to make marathon road trips these days.
Gotta love it. Maybe there should be a thread for really large scale modeling.......... On a more serious note, these Peavey Grain cars were offered some years ago in HO scale. (Atlas Trainman I think) I bought several and tucked them away for later repaining as they weren't something that showed up locally. Since then, a steady stream of them (patched out) has showed up at the elevator here, the latest one this week. They were all wearing AEX reporting marks, but now I'm wondering if the whole series has been sold. Anymore though,I just like seeing something that's not a gray repaint. Interesting the way the reflective tape glows in the early evening sun.
Or it could also be the flash went off on your camera like what happened here. Marathon, Texas on April 7, 2008.
This lost UP was setting for couple of days, then on the 23rd was coupled up here, ...and on the 25th was a part of this train. When did it leave Glendive? I dunno. Will it return? Possibly!
I sometimes think half of UP's locomotive fleet is working on NS. UP units circulate everywhere in the Carolinas. BNSFs are to be found too, but aren't quite as common.
