How tall is the 48" DB fan on PRR #7006? Seems insanely tall in this picture, which is not a normal 48" DB. You can even see how tall the 36" radiator fans are. https://www.google.com/search?q=prr...NQ&biw=360&bih=630&dpr=3#imgrc=eZF6dbmNsWYKDM Is this picture you can see the normal height for a 48" DB fan..., https://shop.cannonandco.net/catego...8A42BA36AEB578683F.qscstrfrnt01?categoryId=14 and the one above #7006 is not normal. What do you estimate is the height of that bad boy?
I wonder if it is not original to the unit, but a used part swapped in at some time during it's service life?
It was a used part. No matter. I am trying to reproduce it. I got the DB part on, but the smaller, taller 36" radiator fans are taunting me. This picture shows it when it was still painted in Conrail colors, yet still have the same taller fans. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4353835
Conrail sent the unit out to be rebuilt (maybe Paducah?), so there's no telling what got changed around there from PRR days. I wonder if the unit even has an actual DB fan in it, as the dynamics were inactivated. A large nut is welded into the control stand to keep the selector from being placed in that position.
Just wondering...........are the fans that tall, or are those just some sort of shroud placed on top of the fans? Be nice to have an overhead view.
Thank you. That's interesting. So where would I get elevated 36" radiator fan shrouds? It seems like they don't exist.
I think what you are looking at is not part of the locomotive. It is a unit heater or some othe HVAC device hanging from the roof above and behind the engine. Charlie Vlk
So looking through info on both the CRHS website and the Conrailcyclopedia it looks like 7006 was not rebuilt into a GP10. Makes sense as the grids of the dynamic brake housing are not plated over to cover the openings when the dynamics are removed when rebuilding. It was retired in 1985 and donated. Looking at this photo at Strasburg dated 1986 you can see the fan housings on the roof are painted a primer red and not blue leading me to believe this was done after retirement. https://conrailphotos.thecrhs.org/photos/cr-7006-gp9-at-strasburg-pa It's possible the fans were removed for parts by Conrail and the holes plated over. Here's a GP10 from above with dynamic brake fan removed and plated over. https://conrailphotos.thecrhs.org/i...leading-xci-at-hecks-on-the-buffalo-line-1087 Wonder if Strasburg fabricated what we're seeing to try and replicate the originals? Could've been Altoona. I have no idea. I looked through my books and the web and only found an ebay listing for a print of 7006 dated 1983. It looks like any other dynamic brake equipped GP9 CR rostered to me. But if you wish to model it as it is now or just like the look of it enjoy the project. https://www.ebay.com/itm/125559471273
It's definitely a part of this engine. What about looking at the old LifeLike GP18? It had the tall fan housings. Could one of these be adapted?
BoxcabE50, the GP18s had one 48" dynamic brake fan and two 48" radiator fans. This has four 36" radiator fans. I have modeled this quite closely, and am quite annoyed I can't model the 36" radiator fans themselves. I have the top covers for the 36" radiator fans, but not the fan blades. I guess to be fair, trying to get the fan blades themselves to not pop up through the housing itself is rather difficult.
Tough to get a picture of these fans. That center fan is at least twice as high as the radiator fan. I forgot about getting a picture of the nut welded into the control stand to prevent the selector from being placed in the dynamic brake position.
