I thought I'd share this with everyone. I have a lot of 3D printed gondolas and a also recently bought some heavyweight passenger cars. I have no jewel boxes for storing these, so I started looking for a solution, and I found this: Plano Pro Latch Utility Box 3701: I just kept all the bubble wrap that came in one of the shipping boxes, and cut out some squares and rectangles. And this tackle box will fit in each row, either three 50' cars, or two long passenger cars. I bought mine for 14$ at Canadian Tire (and will go pick up two more actually), but it's great. Fits the box cars either upright on on the side. Might find something better than bubble wrap eventually, but for now, I'm happy with this storage solution. enjoy!
Just what a I need at the moment! Thanks for sharing! https://www.amazon.com/Plano-23701-00-Stowaway-Adjustable-Dividers/dp/B072QTMQNH
I use $2.00 plastic shoe boxes I bought at Target. I'll check to see if they are still at that price.
WallyWorld doesn't give shipping costs either. Yesterday I placed an order. The reply said it would come in two weeks. I got it this morning already. The shipping cost as much as the two items. A simply printer, ink and cable for my new little computer. Total was $135. The store is 1 mile away.
Check the dollar store for containers like the plastic ones. They may or may not have any? But worth a check! They and Wally World also had those plastic shoe boxes at time too. Just wrap the items in bubble wrap like @Stephane Savard did. The things we come up with as model railroaders is amazing
I don't know what it is, but WallyWorld doesn't know how to do ecommerce. Whenever Bezos is brought before Congress, he claims Wally is a competitor. lol right. Because people turn to Wally as much as they do Amazon. I despise Amazon but it's hard not to use it. I prefer brick and mortar these days because ecommerce is such a cluster now. It used to be: 1. order from website 2. get an email with receipt and tracking Now it's - 1. Order 2. Get confirmation email 3. Get shipment email 4. Get another email to download this app to track your item I hate it. I use these for my RC kits, every time I build a new kit, I get one of these and put all the spare hardware and parts in it. Each container is labeled for a different car. I separate the compartments by parts bag. And you can customize the size of each compartment.
I use those Plano boxes to store my Atlas articulated auto racks. That way I don't have to disassemble them every time I put them away.
At one time the Plano boxes (I believe they were Nos. 404) were being sold I bought a bunch to house all my N scale cars. I run Ntrak so they made transporting them to train shows a lot easier. Six of those Plano trays will fit in a plastic milk case (also sold a Walmart at an exorbitant price) plus a large Plano fishing tackle case will fit three of the trays in the bottom section plus room in the top for engines and other paraphernalia. (WOW, that word has six syllables!) Anyway, each tray would hold 32 forty ft boxcars or twenty-four Atlas 90 ton hoppers.
My grandfather use to smoke cigars. He would always give me the empty cigar boxes. My parents used to laugh because I was so young and I called them 'spagar boxes'. I still use cigar boxes for 'stuff'. I have a small one right here at my desk that collects small items that I take out of my shirt or pants pockets at night. We have a tobbaco shop here that sells cigars individually out of a big humidor cabinet. They sell the cigar boxes once the cigars are sold out of them . I have a few bigger wooden ones out in THERR RV. that seem to collect things and I always forget what I put in which cigar box...
Moose hasn't used a cigar box for storage since Moose was a mooselet -- storing crayons, paste and number 2 pencils... For storing rolling stock, Moose keeps everything in their original containers which are then stored in file boxes under the layout, in the closet, under foot... Oh, and storage boxes used to be old wooden winery boxes used to transport the classier wines, but those are sooo not easy to manage...
???? I never pay shipping from that source. If you order $35.00 minimum, it ships free. Also, your items may not come from the nearby store, but from distribution centers elsewhere.
BoxcabE50, My order was over the requirement. But they split it up. So each is less than required. The printer was on sale, the ink was less and so was the cable to connect the new computer. So all got shipping charges. The printer and cable did come the next day - but not together. Didn't know I lived in Florida. Richard
Well hmm all you gotta do is buy the foam and cut it.......this guy's site got me thinking. And you can cut the foam to custom size.
YEP! Very convenient. I don't smoke...all my boxes came from garage sales.
