And now we need a comparison of what total rail network (North America) we once had, versus today. Which is one reason we have such a small passenger rail map. You can't transport passengers by rail, on a trail, or a fading memory.
Ken, that map was on the same email which gave me this one. Unfortunately, I was unable to copy it. I'll try to find it elsewhere. The US rail network map in the 1940's was similar to Europe's current day map, showing how much has been lost in the last 80 years. To be fair, Europe has twice the population of the US, even though it's about the same size. Europe's cities and towns are closer together, making more sense for rail travel vs. highway or air. Also European countries chose to put more money into rail than highways.
