Ok, so I just recently made the move to dcc for a new small Ho layout. I have one two dcc locomotives, one with sound, the other without. I also have an older straight dc Atlas diesel that I would like to add a decoder to. The online info stresses that the motor MUST be isolated from the chassis. I understand why, that’s not my question. This loco appears to already have the motor isolated......if one looks at the attached pics, there are two little white pads under the motor, and then the bolts underneath that hold it all together also appear to be imbedded in plastic isolators. When I check, there is no continuity from the motor can to the frame. The wheels/trucks appear to be the only electrical pick ups. So.....I think I’m good to go without further work to isolate the motor. The question is....AM I MISSING SOMETHING? This will be my first conversion....just making sure I understand the basics. Thanks in advance. Regards Darryl
It is not just the can, it is the poles of the motor which must be isolated. I believe those are where all the wires come together at the front of the motor. Easy enough to check.
The can doesn’t really matter. By isolating the motor from the frame they are referring to the electrical contacts. Athearn used the chassis for power and a clip on top of the motor for the other side. You had to put tape under the motor where it used to contact the chassis to isolate it. Pretty simple. In this case you just need to make sure the electrical contacts are not contacting the frame, and wire accordingly.
Ok, I get it. When I tested it last night, the only continuity I found was from the wheels to the contacts where the wires attach. I’ll check again before I proceed. Thanks
Right, and it is those contact points where the wires go which must be isolated. The motor poles must be fully isolated from track power, or the decoder will go poof and let out the magic smoke
Me no like Magic Smoke! (at least not electrical in nature) lol This should be pretty simple to convert......everything is right out in the open. that's why I figured it would be a good first try......and since I got it for free from a friend, I'm not out too much other than the decoder. I'll post more when I get it done. D
